Too much swearing

Do you ever watch programmes and think the swearing is ruining it?

Here and there the occasional ‘gosh darn it’ or ‘flaming heck’ add a certain flavour, but when every third word is ‘muthafuckinbitchbastardcuntycockwomblebag’ i start to despair.

Aye I’m with you. And some stand up comedians when you see them live. Too much.

It’s my age, I think. Getting too old for it all.

fuck seems to be accepted in every day speech now.

I personally don't like it and a lot of swearing on tv really puts me off

Oh, fuck off Mary Whitehouse...if you don't like it don't turn the bastard thing on until after 9-fucking-PM

On a more serious note, I'm genuinely surprised at some of the pre-watershed language these days.

I don't like it or think it's necessary when comedians swear all the time.

I think that's highly unlikely, it seems to be the only way a lot of people know how to express themselves. . Depending on the tone and expression it can express extreme distaste or extreme approval . What a useful little word

Sorry to say it isnt going to go away, the more realistic and gritty programmes and movies get it becomes a necessity to define the characters you're engaging with...a gun-toting crack dealer isnt going to be polite as he's putting a .50 calibre bullet through your head....graphically I might add

Yes it is. I don't allow sweating in my class, unless it is used in a context where it is used to emphasise a point.

Not just programmes but in real life too. As I said, each to their own but I can't see what the appeal is. It's almost a competition amongst some who will swear the most.

BRIDPORT

I listen to the wireless a lot, mainly radio 4 extra in the evenings. They run quite a few old crime dramas set anywhere between 1930 and the 1970's, was listening to one all last week, The Paul Temple Mysteries. The worst profanity in it was when he exclaimed 'bye Timothy!'.

nearly spat me coffee out at that one.

I know it's not nice hearing it. Unfortunately I'm guilty of swearing a lot, believe it or not. I get it from my dad as I used to hear him swearing when I was a wee girl and it's got worse as I've got older x

Hate it in films and tv shows that are primarily aimed at kids. Latest Star Trek series and Xmen films have swearing when I don’t think it’s justified. Doesn’t add anything to the dialog. Won’t be long before Dr Who says “fucking cunty bollocks”

Not so much in programmes more every day life as my pet peeve is when people use fuck instead of another word because they can’t be arsed to think of a more appropriate one, it’s downright lazy.

Manchester (she/her)

It's definitely an art form, depicting realism with profanity in fiction. It's one people, including professionals, often get wrong. Less is usually more

Don't take me wrong, I do occasionally use the W..... word. Usually at moronic drivers, in the comfort of my own car and in combination with a killer smile and for personal relief only

Missin’ Yo’ Kissin’

If the script is good then I don't mind the use of bad language.....

No word offends me cos it is what it is a - "word."

It's sometimes more direct & to the point & expressive. But that could be just me.

Perhaps there are times & places for it then?

Telly swearing peaked with Malcolm Tucker in the Thick of It.

"He's Humpty Numpty … sat on top of a collapsing wall like some … fucking … clueless egg cunt."

Everything after that seems a bit prosaic....

I love words. I thank you for hearing my words.

I want to tell you something about words that I think is important.

They're my work, they're my play, they're my passion.

Words are all we have, really. We have thoughts but thoughts are fluid. Then we assign a word to a thought and we're stuck with that word for that thought, so be careful with words. I like to think that the same words that hurt can heal, it is a matter of how you pick them.

There are some people that are not into all the words. There are some that would have you not use certain words.

There are 400,000 words in the English language and there are 7 of them you can't say on television. What a ratio that is.

399,993 to 7. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous to be seperated from a group that large. That's what they told us they were, remember?

"That's a bad word!" No bad words, bad thoughts, bad intentions, and words. You know the 7, don't you, that you can't say on television?

"Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits"

Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that'll infect your soul, curve your spine, and keep the country from winning the war.

"Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, CockSucker, MotherFucker, and Tits"

Depends on the context of the film and obviously certain directors are known for their style. Tarrantino for example

No, I often think "this TV programme would be enhanced by a few expletives." Gardener's World, for example. Or the Antiques Roadshow.

I just want Mrs. Maud Bucket from Broadstairs to say "fucking nora, I'm whacking this ancient piece of shite in an auction first thing on Monday", rather than the usual raised eyebrow towards her husband, Clive. You KNOW they're gonna to sell it. Bollocks to "oh, it's been in the family since the reign of Elizabeth I"
