However

what 80s thing could be more 80s than my most 80s thing ?

I know one of the people who was involved in the Ariston campaign. Looking back now (he's a Church Minister now), he says that the way that the campaign was run was the most unethical thing he and his ad agency had ever done.

yeah that's pretty 80's, but then so is

live-aid, monsters of rock at donnington park, the friday rock show with tommy vance, freezer bags of evostick, running around nuclear airbases being chased by squaddies who couldn't catch a cold, trying to figure what the fuck was happening on channel four american football, the tube, frank bruno getting beaten up, musical youth getting away with singing about narcotic use on kids tv, fierce sound clash nights in butetown community centre ... all more 80's than the guitar player from 70's rock band vinegar joe and some birds in black with bouncing tits to be fair.

Legendary motorbikes... Honda RC30, Yamaha OW-01, Suzuki RG500.

Awesome Rock albums... Def Leppard - Hysteria, Guns n' Roses - Appetite for destruction, Iron Maiden - Seventh son of a seventh son.

Introduction of the GCSE exam & Teachers half-day strikes.

Falklands war, Miner's strike, Challenger Shuttle explosion.

Epic TV shows...Air Wolf, The A Team, Street Hawk, Knightrider, Fraggle Rock, Midnight Caller, The Equalizer.

It's a really hard decade to pin down - at the beginning, there's Blondie in the charts, at the end it was whoever had been in 'Neighbours'.

Event wise? Live Aid, the Challenger explosion, the Miners' Strike, the Falklands, football violence... Any one could be seen as an image of it.

Movies? There's the Rambo films, brat pack, Lethal Weapon...

The most 80s thing? Possibly not a video, possibly a place.

For me it was the pop video. There had been experiments with the idea in the 70’s from Bohemian Rhapsody to Bowie.

But it really took off in the 80’s and right from the start of the decade.

MTV started with its very first pop video by Buggles,Video killed the Radio star.

Then came iconic videos by;

Michael Jackson Billie Jean and later on with Thriller.

The New Romantic movement, Visage Fade to Grey to Duran Duran Rio.

Even Rock bands took it on, especially the more glam US Bands, or not so glam like ZZTop.

So the 80’s is music to me, but the Pop video brings it alive as well.
