Suggest an original album that you feel is even better than that band or artists' Greatest Hits compilation.

I'll start it off with Appetite For Destruction by Guns n' Roses

If a band have ..say ..6 studio albums ( small number l know but it's only for the question ) ..there is one album that is absolutely brilliant ok ..but between the other 5 studio albums there's is one brilliant song on each of those albums ..how can 1 studio album be better than their greatest hits if the best of what that band has to offer is on one album ? I know it's each to their own here as regards everything but the brilliant songs that are on the other albums have to be better than some of the album tracks ..no ?..a poster mentioned Appetite...but surely November Rain , which is not on Appetite..is better than some of Appetite..? Anyway..each to their own , there are a few " Live " albums that l think are better than the studio albums but when you get a " live " album it's usually a great mixture.

I will very politely disagree with you on that. Yes, some are "cash in" ones designed purely to capitalise on an artists catalogue especially when that artist maybe leaves that label or whatever.

To suggest they are made by record companies that haven't a clue what they're doing is simply not true. The opposite really! They are very carefully constructed and marketed to shift units. Many containing unique unreleased "tit-bits" such as unreleased tracks or remixes to entice the diehard fans to buy or stream it too.

However, to suggest they are "shite" is frankly ludicrous. For an artist to have a "Greatest Hits" it means by default they are no "one hit wonders" so have enjoyed at least a modicum of success, most likely internationally. They are by their nature a compilation of their generally perceived best work.

To make people ponder as you are doing is the reason I posted! You raise very valid points - yet - as seen people do think certain stand alone albums eclipse their hits compilations.

Any live albums better than studio??? Ooof! That's a whole separate post unto itself!

Nevermind - Nirvana

I might be in a minority but although I like Nevermind I am not a fan of any of their other albums so think it sounds better as a whole than their hits album

Metallica's S&M album with the San Francisco Orchestra is an eargasm.

NIN don't have any "Greatest Hits" albums. Trent would NEVER allow such... "normality" Hahaha!

I've toured with him a few times. He's not the easiest of people shall I diplomatically say!
