I could only go to a proper dive of a nightclub when I was a teen as I was 16 first time I went. I couldn't go near the two decent clubs in the city as my dad was a bouncer on the door of one and my uncle was a bouncer on the door of the other. |

Would've been the very late Eighties??
In a small towney town called Newark-on-Trent, I managed to blag a job as an underaged glass collector back in the days when the dance floor would get covered in smashed pint pots, the carpets were sticky and DJ Wayne would always finish his set by turning on the house lights, announce "last orders at the bar ladies and gentlemen" and playing Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh.
It was a classy joint called
"The Club". It was a smart shirt and shoes, no jeans kind of place- Believe it or not the Bouncers were genuinely just like Hale & Pace "if yer names not down, ya not coming in".
It all got a bit weird in the nineties when Acid house kicked off and the place stunk of ammo and Vicks vapo rub with the same old regulars singing along to Eezergood by The Shamen completely oblivious to the lyrics |

Only ever went to one once. That was more than enough.
Think it was in Ealing area.
Went there with Brazilian girl who I parted company with soon after.
The club was horrendously crowded, noisy and smokey.
Trying to get a drink from the bar, carry it, hold it, drink it, put it anywhere while dancing was a nightmare.
Didn't take me long to decide that the lifestyle was not for me. Nor was the girl as she only wanted sex once per weekend stopover. |

The local one I mentioned was a great place, 2 floors, served chips and other snacks, put on free bus from morpeth (I think other nearby towns too) so could still go there if drinking out of bedlington. Once Blyth, morpeth and ashington got nightclubs the place sadly died went from being packed Friday and Saturday to sometimes being ten people in.
We called the place worse than shit at the time yet always ended up there, miss it now it’s gone there was no place like it |

From memory it was the Top Rank in Birmingham.
I was about 14 and use to go every Wednesday but I had to leave about 10:30 to get home for 11.
All my mates got to stay out as they were a bit older
Great days. |

The Marquee - around 1987, it was still in Wardour Street at the time. I went to the bar and asked for a pint. The bartender said "of what". I didn't know, it was my first time ordering a drink so I had to go ask a friend. Still got served though |

Snobs. Birmingham. I’d hazard a guess it’s been the first nightclub of many! |
