It depends on how well I know the person, how close and connected we are. I would always choose ‘surprise’ with someone I wasn’t already closely intimate with, because I would never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Surprise allows the person to make their own choice, based on their own limits and boundaries and preferences.

This depends. Do I know the person? I’m more inclined to ask for something specific if I already know them well.
