Shops that don’t take American Express

"The fees they charge. The retailer pays an enormous amount for the 'privilege' of taking the card. 😬"
This, and also they take customers’ queries/claims more seriously with chargebacks/refunds etc, which makes it more of a faff to retailers.
Their prerogative if they prefer not to take it… |

"What’s that all about again?"
In a previous work life I worked for Amex.. nice employers I will give them that!
Probably because of the transaction fees… and remember that American Express isn’t a debit or credit card.. it’s a charge card, and the rules are different around those…. |

In West London, particularly, it's accepted pretty much everywhere. American Express have a "support small businesses" ethos, where they charge lower fees for local shops, independents, cafés, gift shops etc. I use mine all of the time; it's a credit card, not a charge card. |

I don't know anyone who has ever had one but I know of quite a few businesses who don't accept any cards now because of fees.
My local butcher and at least half of the fast food outlets among them. |
