No huge SUV, take ten minutes trying to get into a parking space when there's empty spots either side, they then give up and drive further down into an even bigger space and park straddling two spaces, barely able to see over the steering wheel.

Then jump out with no care in the world.

I'm not convinced it it those with big cars who cant drive. I feel they just dont know the size of their own vehicles, so have to tap the brake whenever another vehicle is approaching them, or pull over when the gap , in their opinion, is too tight, when it clearly isnt.

The standard of driving in general is not very high !

Keep left signage on motorways shouldnt be needed but as we all know, some people just love to cause traffic jams behind them by sitting in the 3rd lane on motorways. Big cars or little... they still drive in the incorrect lanes

Actually smaller cars tend to do better on the NCAP crash tests. Less likely to end up upside down for a start.

Yeah, I think there’s some concerns about flipping of some cars generally in small crashes the big other car the more protection, I’ve seen enough crashes and been hit from behind a couple of times to know the reality of this

Driving quality is so low, that the UK could probably reach full employment, if there was a programme of assessment, testing and training, to get it just to the minimum standards that it should be at.

I think very large cars, for some people, are significant compensation strategies for inadequacies.

Larger cars are more damaging for us all, without appropriate payback measures.

I think driving standards are worse, they always been bad, but today they are diabolical.

No lane discipline, no giving way, no signaling, tailgating, too many kids driving dads BMW 5series or Merc. Driving on the wrong side of the road.

Foreign drivers driving like its Iran.

Big cars are OK if they're driven by proper drivers, not PlayStation gamers.

I don't overly care what people drive, however, I notice at my workplace I am in a tiny minority with a small car. Mostly people have Range Rovers and the like. I mean, they live in London/Surrey!! Even the younger 20 something year olds have them whilst I drive around in a beaten up Micra, which incidentally I love bc I don't care if it gets knocked about or written off

"Try being in Birmingham where the roads are full of uber drivers. Many of them must've learned to drive on a camel. Absolutely clueless!!"

When I lived overseas my friend passed her test using one of those felt road maps young children "drive" on. The test centre said there was a backlog of people and didn't have time to test everyone that day. They asked for people over 25, they were then taken to this little room to drive a toy car around a mat.

She passed and is allowed to drive in the UK.

We have big cars because our jobs, lifestyle and hobbies can't be done easily in small cars...and we like them.

As for driving standards, we've both passed our advanced driving tests with the IAM, it's great for teaching defensive driving and hazard perception which is particularly useful when so many people drive like a Toyota Taliban Technical...

Remember when the midlife crisis 2 seaters got labeled as penis extensions by the feminists?

Well I call these oversized vehicles 'boob implants', they are far too big for the existing car parking spaces and are driven by tits who keep spilling out over into their lanes.

The headlights are dangerous too, bleaching out retinas and are far too high of the ground. Even as a pedestrian some pick up trucks headlamps are higher than a transit's lights, this means there is nothing to see behind this.

These vehicle need to be in a new weight and or size category as their poor blind spots and poor handling needs extra training. Motor bikes are now subject to stricter controls regarding the age of the rider, the level of experience and training and engine output. This needs looking at.

I've had 11 cars, driven countless others, worked as a white van man, driven numerous 3.5 and 7.5t trucks right up to class II lorries. Yet, when I borrowed a SUV, I think it was a KUGA,, it felt like I was carring a van load of bricks and it had terrible blind spots. A Sprinter van, with no rear window felt safer.

-----------------------------------------------------

Not just bikes on youtube has a few things to say about this...

One comment was this:

The point made about kids being hidden by the front bumpers of SUVs (9:40) ... it's not just kids. I'm a wheelchair user and going past an SUV is a TERRIFYING experience. More than once I've intentionally waited on the pavement before crossing in front of an SUV I think is about to pull into the road because I KNOW they can't see me. I've nearly been hit in supermarket car parks twice. The first time I went past a parked SUV and realised the bumper was over my head was sobering.

------------------------------------------------------

I couldn't have put this better myself. Imagine being in a wheel chair being ran over in the carpark, by something this size.

Have any of you seen a 1970’s Range Rover stood next to the new ones. They look tiny. It’s as though consumers believe bigger is better. Manufacturers wouldn’t waste resources like that unless it was demanded. The free market is failing the world. This is why we have the likes of Claus Schwab stepping in saying “you will have nothing and be happy”.

I really like very big cars, what’s not to like when you have so much space for the daily occurrences and for the odd trip to ikea

But I agree there’s some people who are completely useless at driving and still go around in massive behemoths, and no amount of parking sensors and cameras will help them

"I don’t like the little UK cars. I don’t feel safe in them. I prefer to be high up as well & space to get out at over 6 foot and 95 kg, small cars are just awkward & very dangerous in a crash

Actually smaller cars tend to do better on the NCAP crash tests. Less likely to end up upside down for a start.

Utter bollocks Volvo are big cars mercedes are big cars both are up there with the best of them for safety"

euroncap dot com has their results and scores these 4 areas

Adult occupier

Child occupier

Vulnerable road users

Safety assist

This is where the evidence and explanations are.

I personally would like their headlamp blinding risk be part of this test. How much can oncoming drivers and other road users, along with pedestrians can see behind or beside the dangerous arc eye inducing glare. This needs serious consideration. Even door mirrors can send that dangerous light to the driver's eyes.

This is a two tier problem of LED vs non native LED cars that are not allowed the upgrades. This is wrong.

Distractions of touch screens and the poor menu layouts to be measured for poor design. time spent menu hunting is time not scanning the road.

Touch screens are not tactile and don't respond well to zombie finger syndrome (It's a real thing) as real buttons and stalks allow muscle memory, to automate that task without looking away from the road.

as glass cockpits are fine at 20,000 ft, but not on a roundabout or curvy slip road, when you can't find the menu to turn on the lights, heater or indicators. (This is a hypothetical example)

When I lived overseas my friend passed her test using one of those felt road maps young children "drive" on. The test centre said there was a backlog of people and didn't have time to test everyone that day. I think that testing methodology must have been introduced secretly, with millions passed this way

Its not so much the size of the car, its driving standards.

M6 north of Lancaster. Even in this day and age at certain times of the day you can go miles without seeing a car.

On it a few months ago.

Car trundling along at 60 in the middle lane.

I had to go lane 1, to lane 3 and back to lane 1.

In doing so I got flashed and the finger.

Moments like that i wish I had a monster truck. Just to drive over them

And just as many don’t lane discipline and parking ability to drive small cars. Small Mini Cooper parked diagonally with one rear wheel out of parking box in car park is just as bad.

The issue is driver ability not vehicle size, if you aren’t capable of driving it doesn’t matter what size the vehicle is.

I spend a lot of time driving narrow lanes, get just as many problems with small vehicle drivers as do with big vehicle drivers.

I see a lot of negativity.

You need to understand that when someone has a big family, maybe pets, and uses the car for the odd trip to ikea to buy the new wardrobe, the focus or the corsa simply won’t cut the mustard.

The problem is not having a big car, the problem is:

1st being able to drive a big car

2nd being able to drive safe. Not like an utter tw%t who thinks there’s no one else on the road, not like you’re Hamilton racing in Monaco, not like you need to compensate for other insecurities.

Please note, point 2 is applicable to ANY VEHICLE, not just big cars.

couple, us we him her.

I wasn't debating the pros and cons of cars I was pointing out the people who predominantly cannot drive big car's and shouldn't be, granted these same dipsticks would probably be just as bad in small or medium sized car's.

The long and the short of it is: if it takes you 15 mins to try to park in an empty parking space with two empty spaces either side regardless of the size of the car you probably shouldn't be driving.

It's scary that people are on the roads with pretty much zero ability.

Most “SUVs” are in reality rebranded people carriers. It just sounds more upmarket.

SUVs tend to be shorter than estate cars as the passengers sit more upright. An X5 is about 4 inches shorter than a 5 series for example.

The size growth has been at the lower end of the market. A BMW x5 used to be a large vehicle and stand out from the crowd. Now every Ford, Skoda and Kia are as big- or bigger.

There used to be classy understated cars. They don’t really exist anymore. They all seem so brash and flash.

Finally, on the subject of ability to drive. On the narrow lanes of The New Forest, the problem is all the cars who stay at least a foot away from the edge of the road when passing and almost collide with you head on. I’m not sure if it’s that they don’t know the width of their cars or they don’t want to get their precious paint scratched on the hedges. And often it’s the smaller ones who are the biggest culprits.

Why do people need to swing or have open relationships?

They don’t….they just want to.

Also….without the bad drivers we would have nothing to compare ourselves with to claim being a good drivers

Not just bikes, over on youtube did a brilliant video on them.

What these owners don't realise is that their elevated headlamp heights are aimed at pedestrian height.

This makes walking on any pavement an experience into welder's arc light.

This is dangerous. here's a quote from ythe rport

'But when it comes to marketing to women, advertising messages tend to lose their macho edge. Instead, the advertisers simply concentrate on the risks out there – on the grounds that you can add an extra cocoon by driving a big car - despite evidence suggesting that the opposite is the case.

Even D&D the advertising agency thinks the zombie problem is a bit silly.

'In 2018, advertising agency BBH London won an award for their ‘clown’ campaign, persuading viewers that their Audi could help them navigate the peculiar hazards of other drivers.78 One Los Angeles Hummer driver was asked why he bought it. He replied: "I call this my urban escape vehicle," he answered. "Fires, earthquakes, riots. I'm ready.'

I've actually driven past a Ford pick up, that was so jacked up, that as I drove past the thing and the shop window, i couldn't see its windscreen, this means I can't see the driver's face. That blind spot is ridiculous and lethal. Imagine a wheelchair user getting blinded and squashed. transit vans don't have this problem.

For balance, I have a 2003 three door hatchback for local journeys and 2000 grey import shagging wagon for fun and games, camping and carrying cargo when I need to.

Both were built for the Japanese RHD home and world export market and suit me perfectly. I wouldn't touch anything european with a barge pole. Or anything modern, for that matter.

British consumers are being fobbed off with LHD designs which are specially bodged for Britain. The irony is that the vast majority of motorists haven't got the brain to realise that they've been had.
