Heard this on the news last night.. it was the “and finally…”

So….. anyway, in France a man has his wallet sto len… they also use his card to buy a couple of lottery tickets!

Anyway… obviously he notices, card gets cancelled ect ect

That night… his lotto numbers come in! He wins half a million euros!

So … this gent has now put out an appeal to find the thieves, he says he wants to give them half!

So what would you do? Keep it all? Give it away? Give them some? Any other answer!

No he didn't win anything. They bought a scratchcard that won and he's offered to share the money if they come forward. It's doubtful that either party has any legal right to the winnings.

I'd hunt the cheeky git down & give them a lesson they'd never forget!

Then when I was in prison for the next how ever many years I'd sit there smiling in my prison cell....

Or dump the individual at the Fallun Daffa headquarters where they indoctrinate them for the next few years. Or, the Scientologist's. You can't fart without their permission.

I'd be feeling potentially more generous, if it had been several millions, not half a million. If I'd need to meet them, to be able to claim anything, I'd be reluctant to share but if it's the only way, I'd be a mug not to, so would

So being in possession of the winning lottery ticket / scratch card is technically "handling stole n goods", but it's also the proceeds of crime. If the thieves claim the winnings, it will all be taken off them. At least, that's what would happen in the UK anyway

He didn't buy the card.

The fact his card was used is irrelevant. If someone goes on a shopping spree after nicking your card, the bank refunds you what they spent, you don't get the goods.

The cost of the scratchcard/lottery ticket should be refunded to his card and the thieves should get sod all. 🤷‍♂️

A lottery ticket is often an example of a bearer ticket - whoever holds it owns it. At least that’s the case in many countries. Not sure about France.

Yeah can't see he has any claim at all. Apparently the guys who won are homeless- they might as well try and cash in and see what happens!

Was this on a ticket he bought - hence his numbers - or the tickets the thieves bought? If the latter, how does he know what the numbers were? Did he get his wallet/card back before the lottery draw?

This. If he thinks he has ownership of that ticket, he's off his tits. Would he have ownership of her0in they' might have bought??? Do you see the problem with this concept?

I believe they revealed the winning card in the shop, and the purchase was traced to his stollen credit card.

I'd keep it, offer to share it if they came forward and have a flic or two waiting in the wings.

I’d wait for them to come forward thinking I’d share it then report them to the police. Then laugh about it on my travels

If France is like Spain, then they know which lottery ticket serial numbers are assigned to which outlet so when the prize went unclaimed, they must have traced the transaction and contacted the owner of the card.

It all seems very tenuous doesn't it.

All I can think is that they had to verify their identity, couldn't so were required to return the ticket and the person the card was nicked from was contacted. However if the card was stopped and the money refunded to it then the sale of the lottery ticket would be void. So I'm very confused

They also have serial numbers so probably also assigned to outlets in consecutive number batches. Again, the same is true in Spain so I'm assuming France could be similar.

Yeah, it seems odd that he would just know what the winnings were if he wasn't in the shop to start with 🤔

Ok, that makes it a lot clearer! It's an interesting one but really seems a moot point. The money doesn't belong to any of them to split or do otherwise. It seems as though the authorities are going to seize it regardless 🤷‍♂️
