I just found out that to protect the silk, the cocoons – with the pupal still inside – are either submerged into boiling water or treated with hot air, steam, boiling the silkworms alive. 😭😭😭 never having silk again. |

Apparently it takes 3,000 silkworms, more than 100 kg of mulberry leaves and 1,000 litres of water to produce 1 kg of silk so it's not great on the environment or in terms of animal suffering.
Although compared with other things we humans routinely do it's pretty low on the scale.
Before I knew all this my favourite sexy black shirt was made of silk. It eventually fell apart after many years of heavy use.
I now buy synthetic silk made from viscose/rayon or polyester but unfortunately it doesn't feel or look as nice as real silk.
