Do You Have A Fontasy?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Do you have a favourite font or typeface? What's your 'go to' when typing an email or writing a document on your Chromebook, Windows laptop or MacBook?
Or do you just accept the default and crack on with your typing...?
It will always be Helvetica for me. 🩶 |

For writing, a serif font is a must. Cambria, Times, Caslon, all make for easier reading. For design, that depends on the client, the nature of the business, the message that needs to be communicated. Practical favourites are Sofia Pro and Gotham, both contemporary sans serif with a touch of class. My personal favourite is Futura Bold, partly because Kubrick used it for the titles on Eyes Wide Shut, but also because it has such a distinctive personality. I mourned the passing of the old Postscript fonts. Some of the charm has been lost in this new True and Open world of cloud-based fonts, but then I’m an old-skool designer making his way in the Canva world, where talent and flare is sacrificed for speed and price. I still love it though. |

"I like Gill Sans, Frutiger, Helvetica and Rail Alphabet (original). If it's something that needs serifs, you can't beat Garamond.
Neo sans is quite nice too. 🤓"
I knew I loved you for a reason.
I love Gill sans and it's murky history. |

Thank you for this George. I think you need to hold masterclass for us all, ending with tea and biscuits. |

Gill was a bit of a controversial figure 🫣🤓 |

No, usually default however if I'm editing a text and it has been written in comic sans then I'd have to, regarding of topic.
I remember teaching a lesson on FGM once and the font was comic sans. Was a bit disharmonious for my liking. |

Comic sans should have a special place in hell 😬🤓 |

When I first got a PC, many, many moons ago, I was obsessed with downloading old typeface fonts.
I love the look of typewriter fonts. But anyone who has ever used an old manual typewriter will know they were a fudging nightmare to use. This way I got the look of a typewriter but with the ease of use of a PC.
My boss in work had to tell me to calm down with the fonts as they liked documents and letters to look standardised. Killjoy!!
I’m not sure if this admission has killed off my streetcred? 😳

I prefer copper plate handwriting and calligraphy.
A keyboard will never be as sexy as a pen and paper.
The sound of a fountain nib scratching on parchment and the smell of ink. 😈
A writer’s calloused middle finger, ink spots on a cuff. Hot.
And old printing presses. With boxes for the letter plates. I found one in an antique shop and it was just so beautiful. |

This is all true, sadly my handwriting has gone to shit through lack of real need to do it. |

The Doves Press - a beautiful typeface and fascinating story. Typefaces and fonts are one of my favourite rabbit holes. And poor Comic Sans gets an undeserved bad rap because it was never used for its intended purpose. 😢 |

"We have a company specific font in work as there is ALOT of public facing information, so a branded font is required. I quite like that."
Same here. It's a nice font, and I like the corporate look. 🤓 |

This. And calibri as a neutral email typing font.
The kids changed their phones to comic sans and it's fittingly childish. |

Nah I don’t care any more. My favourite used to be Helvetica, but that got played out and was overused by 2006. Now it’s the equivalent of times new roman.
So just give me the default, I don’t care. If I have to present it to a company, brand or artist then I’ll use their branded font face. Other than that give me whatever is default.
