Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

For the footy anoraks on here, keep us updated with your travels, highs & lows as the season comes closer to its end

* * *

Two games (159th/160th of season) for me today. Millwall U21 v Barnsley U21 in the Professional Development League at The Den at 2pm. Then heading to North London in evening for Arsenal v. Fulham, with bonus of catching up pre-match with an old AFC-supporting schoolmate who now lives up in Lincolnshire, but still attends most home games.

Impressive performance from Millwall U21 to beat Barnsley 4-1.

As for this evening, I think 2-1 flattered Fulham who didn't really create much. Felt Arsenal won without getting too far out of second gear.

My next matches are Orient v. Wigan on Sat, Fulham-Liverpool on Sun.

Losing the will to live watch AFC Wimbledon yet again capitulate, we go again on Saturday with a visit from Harrogate.

Essentially every game in the run in is "must win" if we want any chance of automatic promotion or the playoffs.

Back in Malice

Hope you stuff Harrogate. One of those pointless clubs that had a bit of money, got promoted to the League, then did …. absolutely nothing. Haven’t even got the decency to be drawn at home against WHU.

Talking of which, had my first game in 2.5 weeks on Tuesday, with the annual trip to Molineux. I always look forward to this one, although God knows why. It’s almost always the worst game of the season, and this week’s game was no exception. Both sides were equally as bad as the other, and I am getting sick of teams playing tippy-tappy football at the back when they do not have the personnel good enough to do this.

Bournemouth at home on Saturday, then a break while I head out to the Far East for a holiday. This season cannot end soon enough!

Frustrating afternoon at Brisbane Road. A pass too many, a scuffed shot here and there, a deflection....if Orient were still playing now it still wouldn't bounce in. 15 efforts on goal to Wigan's ONE says it all, a goalless draw when Orient really needed all three points.

Anyone else get to a game today ?

Well, THAT was pleasantly unexpected bonus this afternoon.

Closing period of the first half, Fulham were absolutely magnificent. Played without fear and attacked Liverpool. No doubt the media will dress it up as a 'Liverpool off-day'. Thankfully they only got one back with around twenty mins to go, and Fulham did enough to hold out.

Watford home to Hull on Tues, trotting out to Oxford on Weds for game with QPR, then it's back to The Vic on Thursday for F.A. Youth Cup semi-final with Manchester City.

Millwall do love throwing a spanner in the works, don't they ? Great result for them, they've already turned Burnley & Leeds over at home. Will be in Lower Dockers on Sat. Bloody love the Championship.

Speaking of which, wasn't too bad a game at Watford. Deserved the win, but I thought Hull played some decent stuff, certainly have the basis of a good passing game, but obviously are short in front of goal. Oxford v. QPR awaits later today (as it is now)

Oh, and P.S.....what a cracking result for the Goons. Anyone who says they saw that coming is a bloody liar.

Decent game at Oxford with a good flow to it last night. QPR started brightly and scored early. Strengthened position with a second just before the break.

Oxford had to improve in second half, and did. Back in the game on the hour. But as the gmatch entered stoppage time, QPR broke to seal the win. 1-3 FT & a very entertaining evening.

Watford's superb run in the Youth Cup ended with a narrow 0-1 defeat by Manchester City. Crowd of just over 4,000 at The Vic tonight

Want a name for the future ? Watford's goalkeeper Sam Morris - if he has a twenty year career he won't have many better games than tonight.

I suddenly have become again the European travel agent… they are asking me about a certain German city at the end of May (and I am telling people not to jinx it!)

Also… I might be going to the women’s champions league semi final 1st leg vs Lyon next Saturday…. I am hearing it’s close to being a 60,000 sell out

Hard fought draw away to fellow promotion/playoff chasers Doncaster. Other results mostly fell our way so there is hope.

We certainly need 6 points over the Easter period if we have any chance of automatic promotion.

Was in Germany on 'manoeuvres' with a couple of beers in a barn sat around a radio with several others..

Then when the news came through I tried to get to a phone to call home as my two cousin's plus my brother were at the game..

After several hours of sheer worry it turned out only my cousin was there but was safe and my brother and my other cousin had broken down on the way..

An awful, awful day for all those involved and a dark stain on those who tried to cover it up..

I was at an Arsenal game at home to Newcastle on that day (56,000 at Highbury which for the size of the ground you think how on earth!)

Anyway about 15 minutes into the game there was a buzz about “some sort of incident” and there had been injuries…it was only at half time that we had a better understanding! The one thing I remember is that in the 2nd half the north bank was silent with the exception of 1 transistor radio which was blearing out loud

The irony being Highbury had been a semi final location until a couple of years before, when they stopped because the club had refused to put up fencing!!!

The saddest thing for myself is this wasn't the first such 'tragedy' that cost fans their lives in the UK..

Lessons were ignored because for the authorities, the governing bodies and the clubs the fans were treated less than cattle..

RIP the 97..

YNWA

I was at an Arsenal game at home to Newcastle on that day (56,000 at Highbury which for the size of the ground you think how on earth!)

Anyway about 15 minutes into the game there was a buzz about “some sort of incident” and there had been injuries…it was only at half time that we had a better understanding! The one thing I remember is that in the 2nd half the north bank was silent with the exception of 1 transistor radio which was blearing out loud

The irony being Highbury had been a semi final location until a couple of years before, when they stopped because the club had refused to put up fencing!!!

"

That's right. After Everton got their late winner v. Southampton in 1984 there was a bit of pitch invasion.

The Football Association advised Arsenal that if they wanted to host any more semi-finals, they'd have to put fences up. They refused.

Thus Liverpool v. Southampton in 1986 and Luton v. Wimbledon in 1988 went to White Hart Lane instead

"Off to Villa Park tonight. Tough game ahead but hopefully the 12th man will get us over the line "

Our 12th man made a huge difference. Place was rocking. Amazing effort against a very good team who had not been beaten in 28 games. Unfortunately it the end of Villas championship campaign for this year.

"An afternoon jaunt to The Den, Millwall U21 v Crewe U21 in the Professional Development League (2pm kick off, £5 admission)."

One of strangest games I attended involved Crewe Under 21 ,

they were at Hull,

, Crewe normally wear red but that day played in their away kit

, black and turquoise stripes on the front, plain black on the back of the shirt ,

black shorts ,

black socks

Hull wore their home kit

Black and amber stripes on the front, plain black on the back of the shirt

Black shorts

Black socks

Most of the time had to guess which player was on which side by the direction they were running

Musings from two Good Friday games...

On the whole, wasn't enamoured with the way Burnley played. Their players seemed to have difficulty staying on their feet. Sissoko was a complete bell end, getting himself booked twice in the space of a minute He's past it now, so can fuck off as soon as he likes. Shocking display from a referee who lost control of the game early on. Can't say I enjoyed Burnley's football at all. Only redeeming feature is in James Trafford, they have the

Comfortable win for Leeds at Oxford. 0-1 which could/should have been more. Oxford will be OK, but offered very little in terms of attacking play

My travels today took me across town to watch the worst team ever to stink the Premier League out.....who were home to Southampton !

Oh dear, what a hard watch West Ham are. They have ONE player, Bowen, and that's it. As with many teams who have needed snookers for months to stay up and now don't have to worry, Southampton played with plenty of freedom - and THOROUGHLY deserved their 93rd minute equaliser.

Off to Fulham v. Chelsea tomorrow, and now have a "double header" for Monday. Am at Millwall v. Norwich in the afternoon. Had a message earlier this evening from an acquaintance who is unable to use his ticket for Spurs-Forest on Monday night. Did I fancy making use of it ? Yes please !

I came on here to give vent to how bad the ‘Appy ‘Ammers are, only to be beaten to it, and far more succinctly, by a neutral. This season has been one of the hardest to watch in all the time I have been following them (home and away).

For all of you who wanted The Moyesiah out, I hope that you are delighted with what we have got in return.

On a brighter note, congratulations to my local team Aylesbury United for a new club record of 11 straight defeats. A remarkable achievement in the Club’s 130-year history and one that has summed up my season. As one of my mates said, “You gotta love a record-breaking season”.

I think those 3 years in Europe are a large part of my malaise with WHU. I loved jumping on a plane every couple of weeks to see us play at a new ground, and Sunday matches suit my social life better (selfish, I know).

My only hope is that we bring Potts and Earthy back from loan (and possibly Marshall, who I like the look of). I can better tolerate losing playing our youngsters, and it feeling like a West Ham team, rather than watching a bunch of disinterested foreigners putting so little effort in.

Agree, Potts and recently Earthy have been looking the part. Kudus just winds me up more than Pacqueta now, squad needs an overhaul, and we need some bloody tempo to the game.

Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh. Bloody frustrating (& typical) afternoon at Fulham.

Played very well in first half, deservedly leading at the break - but only 1-0.

Chelsea couldn't play as badly in 2nd half & didn't. They gradually got stronger as the game progressed and unfortunately Fulham couldn’t even hold on for the draw. Seen it SOOOOOOO many times from Fulgam this season. Still in dire need of a 15-20 goal striker, but then again so are most clubs in the division.

Bonkers, isn't it ? SHOULD beat Swansea on Sat - but Burnley on last day is going to be a bugger. I am at Orient v. Wycombe at 12.30 on Sat, and then heading over as quickly as poss afterwards (Leyton to Stratford on Central, then to Canada Water on Jubilee. Hoping not too much of an over-run at Orient, I might just make kick off if connections are OK).

Thought it was a deserved win for Millwall this afternoon. Excellent use of set pieces, some cracking deliveries in from Saville. Norwich barely had a kick in 2nd half.

Then on to Tottenham tonight.....and if you thought West Ham have problems, jeeeeez, what dreadful defending. True, Spurs only have two (which may well become three) matches ahead that matter. The crazy thing is they could well finish 17th yet be in next season's CL.

Anyway....back to The Cottage tomorrow evening, Fulham U21 v. Lyon U21 in the Premier League Intercontinental Cup semi-final. Freebie as ST holder.

Have never seen a League match at Stevenage, so taking in their game with Birmingham on Thursday evening. Watford U21 have a game which is 'open' at Vic Rd on Friday afternoon (also free for me) then I have the two(ish) games sorted for Saturday as outlined above.

Went to Turf Moor last night to watch the Clarets gain promotion back to the Premier League.

Whilst the thrill of promotion is exciting, the prospect of the dull Premier League isn't that exciting.

West Ham United u18s take a bow. They won the u18s League Cup tonight, beating Reading 2-1. Decent game, both teams played well and the hosts were unlucky to lose.

Fulham's U21s were sucker-punched in both halves of their game with Lyon.

Fulham had much of the play over the 90 mins. Four mins before the break, Lyon scored against run of play. Then in 89th minute clinched the tie from the penalty spot. 0-2 FT

As has been shown this season & last, it's becoming nigh on impossible to survive.

When Watford were last up for 2021-22, home record was two wins, two draws, fifteen defeats. It's no fun watching if you can't get vaguely near competing.

The Premiership is the most over-hyped myth in football (even greater than the so-called atmosphere at Anfield). Yes, there are some fantastic stadia (devoid of the atmosphere of yesteryear), yes there are some phenomenal players on view (although seemingly lacking many real characters) and yes, the English game has a huge global audience. Having said all that, it’s a sterile experience, that is a pale imitation of the glory years of the 70s-early 90s.

The Championship is far closer to how I remember the good ol’ days. More opportunity to take larger support away, more teams having something to play for at the end of the season at both ends, more general passion on and off the terraces.

As mentioned above, it’s no fun for clubs like Watford, Burnley, Sheff Utd et al coming up, getting batttered each week and going down without a fight. For the fans of Luton and Ipswich, it’s a one-off to enjoy; for those caught in that dead zone of 18th in the Premiership down to 7th in the Championship, it is perpetual boom n bust.

Anyway, enough negativity. Welcome back Burnley, one of my favourite away trips, and Dirty - my absolute favourite away trip. The one ground that forgot the 80s finished quite a while ago, and where all our old guard gather for a trip down memory lane.

Newcastle and Gateshead

Actually I am going to disagree with you a bit here … the premier league fight for European football is going to be brilliant… god knows what games sky are going to show on the last day… let me explain why

At the moment England are guaranteed at least 8 spots in Europe next season

Top 5 will get spots in the champions league based on UEFA coefficients (ranked no.1)

Europa league will get 2 spots at the moment… they technically go to the 6th place team.. and the winners of the FA cup

The Europa conference will get 1 spot… it technically goes to the winner of the league cup (Newcastle)

Now… if crystal palace win the fa cup, they will get a Europa League spot…. If “not palace” ( Man City, Aston Villa or notts forest) win the fa cup AND finish top 5 then that spot goes back to being based on league position…

If Newcastle finish top 6 (or 7 based on what happens in the fa cup) then there Europa conference place also reverts to being based on league position

With me so far……..

Now… 2 wildcards

1) if man united or spurs win the Europa league… they will automatically get a champions league spot…. Which means there would be 6 English teams in the champions league

2) if Chelsea wins the Europa conference place .. and don’t finish top 5… they will automatically get a Europa league spot… which would mean there would be 3 English teams in the Europa League

So there is a possibility that next season England could have:

6 champions league representatives

3 Europa league representatives

1 Europa conference representative

10 teams in Europe….. half the blooming league… finished in the top half of the board, get your passport ready!

Points difference at the moment between 3rd place Man City and 7th place villa…. 4 points!

Points difference between 8th place Bournemouth and 12th place palace…. 5 points!

9th place could get you European football….

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

Perfectly summed up.

Chatting to the people sitting around me at The Vic earlier in the season, and we had the "Do we want to go back up?" chat on a handful of occasions. The universal answer was 'no'. What's the point unless you can compete and stay there like Brentford, Fulham, Bournemouth etc, have ? When Watford went up in 2015, they stayed there for five years. Wouldn't have a prayer of doing that now. And in the last ten years, there have been two promotions, an F.A. Cup Final and a semi-final. That's a small club punching above their weight. It's a little bit overlooked that up until 1979, Watford had only spent three seasons in the top two divisions (1969 to 1972). Since getting back into Div. 2 in 1979, they've only spent two beneath that level (1996-97 & '97-98).

I know the way I watch watch will baffle some people, but on that score I couldn't really care less - my time, my money etc, nobody else's business. I enjoy watching a mix of mainly Prem/Champ matches. The chessboard tactics of the Premier League can get tedious. The Championship is far more exciting to watch.

My only gripe with the Football League is not doing something about away ticket pricing. I rarely bother watching either Watford or Fulham away, I can't be doing with constant standing, and would sooner find something else in London (hence regular visits to Orient, Millwall, maybe QPR etc). As we know, away tickets in the Premier League are capped at £30. On point of principle I won't pay more for an away ticket in the Championship than I would in the Premier League. Last season for instance, I made my first visit to Bramall Lane, Fulham were away at Sheffield United late on. Ticket price £30. I'd looked at possibility of seeing Watford there in Championship the previous season. Tickets were £33. No thank you. If away tickets are capped at £30 in the Prem, they should be £25 max in the FL.

If I had any say in the running of the game, there's one rule change I'd make immediately, namely that once the added time board goes up on 90 mins you're not permitted to make any further substitutions (even for an injury). They're all done to waste time, we all know that. Keep the game flowing and get it done & dusted. (There is one other cosmetic tweak I'd make, that being it should be compulsory to wear your traditional/home colours unless there is a genuine clash requiring a change. Of course I know this won't happen, when clubs sign kit deals these days they're no doubt contracted to wear away & even third kits on a number of occasions each season)

Fabio, put the way you have, it does appear exciting, but then this is exactly what Sky want - everyone believing that everything about the Prem is super-duper. Who really cares who finishes in what European competition? The Champions were decided months ago, the 3 relegated sides known almost from the moment they came up; who finishes 2nd-9th is of no real relevance (unless you support one of those teams). Having 9-10 teams potentially in Europe dilutes the cache of being there (and I say this as someone who had 16 brilliant European away trips in 3 years, which only ended 12 months ago).

The football being produced this season in the top flight, across the board, has been the least exciting in living memory. I have seen every team in the flesh this season except Forest (this gets rectified next month). Only one team has impressed me - Liverpool at our place, when they walloped us 5-0.

I missed Arsenal's visit this year, but saw us win at The Emirates. That day, both teams delivered sterile tippy-tappy performances with no passion; even though we won, there was little joy watching the game.

You want real excitement this weekend, look no further than the National League South, where any one of SIX teams can win the league.

Btw, you’re one of the posters on the football threads I really respect, so this is not a dig. I’m just sick of The Prem this year (and with the fact that my lot are so shit right now).

European football - rich clubs becoming richer.

The reality is, the likelihood is the 3 teams who come up will be the 3 teams who go down.

If you're not competing for Europe, and essentially, relegation no longer exists in the Premier League for established teams, what exactly is there to enjoy?

I'll take the example of Nottingham Forest - they're having a great season.

So for teams like Crystal Palace, Wolves, Everton etc, where all they do is spend eternity in mid table - what is enjoyable about the PL for those teams?

Unbelievably for anyone that knows me, I will be cheering OAFC on in the playoffs.

It is my target to see have seen my lot play away to all of the 92 league teams. Currently on 84; with Morecambe going down and Barnet all but guaranteed to come up, it takes me to 85. Looking likely Carlisle will drop (one of the 8 I’ve not seen WHU at), and Oldham are the only club in the playoffs I’ve seen us at (unless Southend can fluke their way in).

Likelihood is that York will piss the playoffs, but one can hope.

Shockingly poor game at Stevenage tonight. It could be argued that Birmingham's work for the season is done & dusted.

Superb out-of-nothing strike from Cochrane with 15 mins to go was the only highlight from 95 mins of utter dross. 0-1 FT.

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

Can we say it's getting near squeaky bum time for various teams ? I'm at TWO games today with "must win" written all over them for three of the teams involved.

Firstly at 12.30 I'm at the one of the 'games of the day' in League One, and two clubs I have soft spots for, Orient v. Wycombe. This is currently 6th v. 3rd. While I have nothing against Wrexham, it would have been preferable to see a team that has had zillions spunked all over them go up automatically. So Wycombe need a win and to hope Wrexham slip against Charlton (2nd v 4th !) later.

Meanwhile, the last play-off spot is a straight shoot out between Orient & Reading, both on 72 points, but Orient with a +9 goal difference advantage. So they need to win this one as well. Too close to call ! But I have a strong feeling that Orient & Wycombe may have a couple more matches against each other in the next few weeks.

I'm then relying on tube connections being right (& no massive over-run at Brisbane Road). It'll be a brisk walk back to Leyton Station, one stop on the Central Line to Stratford, and then half a dozen stops on the Jubilee to Canada Water. If I'm there for 2.40ish, I should just make kick-off at The Den - Millwall v. Swansea.

On paper Swansea can still make the play-offs, However, Millwall are just three points behind sixth place Coventry but with a far worse goal difference. So I expect a full on intense display from Millwall this afternoon. Depending on other results they need a minimum of four (but probably six) points to have a shout of snatching sixth place BUT next Saturday are at Burnley. Of course, if Coventry win at Luton at 12.30 today, that would as good as put an end to Millwall's play-off hopes anyway.

So a fascinating day with all these various permutations awaits for me. As always to those heading out, safe travels, enjoy your game.

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

So.....1-0 wins for Orient & Millwall mean they both something to play for next.

Orient-Wycombe long had the feel of a 'one goal' game. First half was very tense & tight. I thought Wycombe had the better of the early stages of the second half, but after Orient scored I couldn't see them letting it slip.

I stayed to the bitter end and it was 2.30 by the time I left Brisbane Road. Consequently it was 3.15ish by the time I got to The Den. Millwall were clearly on top during the first half, and deservedly in front just before the break. However, they could get any momentum together in the second half, and had keeper George Evans to thank for a string of saves to earn the win.

For Orient, it's a straight battle with Reading for sixth spot. Whoever gets the better result next Saturday is in the play-offs, simple as that.

Millwall's afternoon will be a little more complicated. First & foremost, they've got to to Burnley & WIN ! That might sound impossible, but I did see them win the game at The Den in November (which I think was their last defeat). Then a lot will depend on Coventry v. Middlesbrough. Anything other than a Coventry win gives Millwall a chance, but only if they win at Burnley. Their goal difference is inferior to both Coventry & Middlesbrough, so for instance a Middlesbrough win and a Millwall draw would see Coventry out of the play offs but Boro would also leapfrog Millwall because of their GD.

All good fun, eh ?

You have my favourite player - your number 24 Dan Scarr. Really miss him at Argyle!!

We had a great game on Saturday at Preston despite getting the news we were relegated just before ko. An amazing 3 points which I asked for for my birthday but I did she’s a few tears as it’s the 1st time I’ve experienced relegation in my 4 years of supporting them 😢

lincs /Hudd & Derby cinema

Last day of Championship Saturday , , Hull , Luton , Preston , Derby or Stoke could go down with Argyle and Cardiff

The clubs do not really have to look out for the other teams scores despite 5 teams being in the mix ,, it simple ,, win and you stay up

Derby play Stoke, which would be a fun one to be at.

My tip is Preston to be relegated. They haven’t been anywhere near the relegation zone all season and have not had to battle like the others. They have a difficult trip to Bristol City.

Wild Border Country of Herts & Middx/West London !

Wrapped up April with a Premier League Cup semi-final at Loftus Road last night, QPR U21 beating Burnley U21 2-0. (184 games & counting)

Other semi-final sees Southampton U21 host Brentford B tonight, so naturally hoping for a Brentford win which would provide an easily accessible local Final !

Thanks for everyone who's chipped on here, May/End of Season thread now open.
