There's a difference between words that are formed from the initial letters of component words, such as Laser - light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation or NATO, etc and an initialism, such as CNC which many of us think of as acronyms.
The acronyms are the ones becoming words |

That'd explain why we had to use machines requiring more manual labour in workshop classes. I used to think it was because the CNC was more expensive but now I know 😀 |
