Wetherspoons…?

Wetherspoons seems to polarise people’s opinions… some love a ‘Spoons… some can’t stand them…

I love a Wetherspoons, it’s my dirty secret… I work from home mainly, so I’ll sit in a good spoons, order some food and take advantage of their free coffee refills as I get my work done…

Lots of interesting characters knocking about, and no 2 ‘spoons are the same…

My favourite meal is probably a Katsu Curry, Full English, or a Mixed Grill, and I don’t really drink anymore, but the 7% Pear Cider is decent, but I normally have coffee and Pepsi Max Cherry…

What’s your favourite Meal? Drink? Or do you absolutely despise the place? Let me know

Spoons is "cheap and cheerful", you always know what you're getting. I usually end up having Mixed Grill, and if I'm feeling like it, I'd have "Sex on the Beach" pitcher to sip.

Usually get a pizza or burger maybe? Drink maybe a cider. If I’m out drinking I’ll get double j&d, pitcher or a shot. It’s cheap so good starter place

Sucks they’re getting rid do the mixed grill

I’ve not heard they’re getting rid of The Mixed Grill… hopefully it doesn’t happen in all Spoons… I can only eat certain things on their menu

When I could eat Pizza, they were probably my go-to - or a Burger… can’t eat bread now though

There are a lot spoons by me. Definitely some right "characters' frequent some of them.

I find they have a great selection of ales, ipas and stouts.

Food wise, all day brunch, fish n chips or mixed grill with mash

Love it for the convenience, we can order food and drinks without needing to leave the table.

I've never had an issue with the food, I don't expect Michelin quality meals with what we pay and it's one of the only places locally we can order vanilla vodka without being ripped off.

"I am not a spoons regular but when I misread OP talking about a Katsu Curry Full English then I thought I had been missing out on heaven!"

Haha, yeah, there’s all-kinds on the menu these days… Katsu Curry comes either Breaded, Grilled or Vegan not like the old days when it was fish n chips, hunters chicken, or a burger n chips

Still… if it’s not for you, it’s not for you - I love how vastly people’s opinions vary when talking about Wetherspoons… it’s always a fun conversation…

“Fancy meeting in Spoons?”

“…you what mate?”

It’s ordering on the App that makes it for me, definitely and you know what you’re getting, even if you’re in a new town/city… but it can get dangerous when you’re all out and everyone gets giddy when ordering on the app drinks just keep turning up

Yes, there was a plum porter at 6% recently costing an extortionate £1.49.

They vary so much. Some spoons are quaint and relaxing. Some feel lively and youthful. Others are sticky carpets, toothless wonders and fights.

I must admit I do enjoy all types of spoons. They have something about them and I don’t mind the cheap and cheerfulness. But a lot of my friends and loved ones don’t like them, so I don’t go often.

Yeah… that’s true… we had issues with all our old “historic” buildings in my home town being demolished… but ‘spoons does save a great deal of them… not just old pubs, but Libraries, Town Halls, Firestations etc… and some of the conversions you can overhear in them are on another level

I'm indifferent. They have some lovely buildings though. I'm often in the Keswick area and do appreciate the one there in an old magistrate's court. Sadly though the one nearest me is just full of very elderly gentlemen with sick down their lapels. Pretty much the only people who frequent it - at least they enjoy it i guess - from breakfast through to closing.

I visit a local spoons once a year when I take my van for an mot, I go in just after 8 have a coffee and breakfast seems very good value, the coffee is just under a pound but states more on the menu not discovered why it is cheaper and free refills, have to say i am always somewhat surprised at the amount of folks drinking beer at that time of day but they may be on the way home after night shift in local factories.

Cant beat a Spoons, when ever im out and about somewhere in the uk, its normally the 1st place i look for. Good fry up and coffee of a morning to start the day. Then if im in after 4pm ill either have the scampi or mixed grill. Do like the selection of ales and ciders. Maybe a round of jagerbombs or whatever they call them in spoons. Sit in a booth or a open table and people watch

I like a good Spoons but my nearest one is 7 mile away and a 30 minute bus journey. Not long ago they took the grill out so its all ding meals and the like so no more mixed grills in there but they can still manage to do the breakfasts and gammon steaks etc so how does that work.

Always a good selection of beers, lager and ciders to choose from and its great for people watching.

Dubai & Nottingham

So I had a visitor over recently and we did a quite a few spoons pubs just for the odd pint, because they have some really good real hours between one and £3 a pint which is just crazy prices. My visitor lives in Dubai was used to pay £15-£20 a pint for that kind of beer.

Some of the spoons are really nice. We’ve got into some good conversations sat out in the Sun with strangers. Drank some nice beer. Had a nice time.

Then I’m at a couple of friends yesterday and one in the city here and it was fucking awful just full of complete wankers being loud swearing and just a horrible experience. I couldn’t even stay there. It was so awful.

And the food some of it is possible, but generally it is shit but it is cheap.

Overall, I think it’s a great business model and it serves a purpose. It’s not for everyone and some of them are really awful places.

"One thing I like about the spoons they all have a long walk to the toilets. Lol. Rare it's close by. "

I think they do this on purpose to deter people walking in who are not customers, the toilets are always really nice in my experience, but yes, they are miles away. Tip, you can buy the disabled toilet key on Amazon.

"If they closed tomorrow the world becomes a better place .. big each to own .. they don’t give you there and if my mates meet there I make other plans .. simple..

A man after my own heart! "

As you were able to decipher what was said, can you elaborate please? I'm assuming he's not a fan but why so?

It depends. I've had some terrible food in some and great food in others. Think it depends on the staff. But it's always cheep so can't knock it in my opinion

I've been meeting my mate at the Croydon Spoons for 30 years. I hate the place but he's a poor pensioner so likes the price. No denying the beer is insanely cheap as is the food. However Tim Martin isn't a particularly nice person, I hated his attitude over Brexit and towards his staff during COVID.

I love a good hack… I used to live by the canals, so had a key for the toilets, as they sold them to the boaters in the shop… sounds like a solid plan for a new kind of swiss army knife

Has a built in Wetherspoons toilet key… would sell like hot-cakes at the local market!

Makes sense about the toilets… didn’t occur to me, but that’ll be the reason
