There's been a reduction in the use of semicolons . How much do you use them and do you use fewer than you did, in the past? How much do you enjoy them being a part of English usage?

No, I use as many as ever; I think they're underrated.

I'll continue use them on a regular basis; very useful to get ideas across and improve readability of almost any document.

A semi colon represents when someone could have chosen to end their life but didn't...

How else will we get two clauses into a sentence? I guess we could misuse a comma. *Shudders*

Or people just don't know how to use them?

Guess you could say the same about any punctuation mark. Still, it's not that deep. I'll use them, others don't have to.

I agree . It's amazing how much written language is made unclear, due to poor use of punctuation. I'm not the best but do enjoy and appreciate semicolons. I've used just one today

They're even being used less in novels -

one appearing in every 205 words in 2000 to one use in every 390 words today.

I enjoy semicolons; however it is clear to me that not all folks appreciate their usage.

.

Talking of punctuation, the BBC 4 radio show "Word of Mouth" had a good episode on the full stop and other punctuation.

.

There is a feeling amongst a some folks that using full stops in online messaging is a bit curt / rude.

.

For example, in a text chat, perhaps discussing on whether we might go out for dinner, some people might say in a reply "Fine."

.

Some folks consider that a bit curt or sharp. It could be perceived at a bit "huffy". These folks would prefer no full stop.

.

Personally, I find the lack of full stop confusing. "Fine" as a reply says to me "They've not ended the conversation, there could be more to come". And it also says to me "They're in agreement, but just forgot to add a full stop".

Its easier to hide a semicolon in public.

When you get a fullerectcolon in public; what an awkward situation that is.
