I was getting dressed this morning and thought…

I understand why we say a pair of socks as there are two…but why do we also say a pair of pants when there is one? Surely it should be a pant?

I'm presuming it's because there are 2 legs, but then a jumper has 2 arms and we don't say a pair of jumpers ?

It's a shortening of the word pantaloon where you would need two to make a pair of pants...

But isn’t pantaloon a ‘pair of trousers’?

Just one garment? lol

Adding more to the mix, pliers were called a pair of pliers, but i now hear them being called a set of pliers more.

So is a set more or less tban a pair 🤔

Never heard of a set of pliers…screwdrivers and spanners yes….but only pliers as a pair. Maybe we should ask Chaka Deamus lol
