It can be quite damaging in my opinion. Often people believe anything they read and share/like it willynilly. People can also get depressed thinking others lives are better than theirs. It does have it's advantages though, I use FB to see what local events are on and to follow the cinema. I very rarely post anything and have only 9 friends and only 7 of them are living. I don't do any other social media..

Well i have mixed feelings, far to much trash and bloody influences.

But it also can be very educational.

Having said that I only have Facebook and haven't typed on that for about 8 years, I just read it

It's really damaging, however it brings me 90% of my customers for both of my businesses. Word of mouth just isn't enough anymore.

However I have recently discovered that fab nutters and social media for my business do not go hand in hand very well and can be a j absolute nightmare

I’m ok sticking to my Instagram for nice photos and wee stories, Facebook is a cesspit, never had Twitter or TikTok so can’t say much about those

It’s a cesspit full of stupid vacuous idiots, whose voting card should be rescinded & purveyors of falsehoods, trying to flock you anything regardless if it’s legal.

They should all be sat in front of a TV and made to watch Postman Pat, Rosie & Jim and if they’re lucky Noggin the Nog.

Apart from that I’m ambivalent

So is it down to poor regulation because the laws governing it are different in every country- so what may be allowed in one is explicitly banned in another? The availability of anonymity allows people to behave unacceptably with little chance of redress?

We ALL need to take responsibility for social media. Parents need to take control over what their children have access to. Adults need to question what they read and go off to look at other opinions.

It's no good wanting 'them' to do 'something about it'.

The Heart of Hollownest, Dudleyish.

Social media is a negative for humans.

We do not need to be aware of what everyone is doing at all times.

Anonymous profiles are the primary issue.

It enables anyone to spout bollocks and share lies without redress or accountability.

I'd prefer it if social media sites insisted on ID at set up and had the ability to block users who just use it to stir shit. 🤷‍♂️

Reading

Everyone is so quick to list the negative aspects of social media and it's slow or non existent to list the positives.

From my own usage of social media I can see the spread of accurate and positive information around LGBTQ+ communities which aren't being taught in schools and fills a gap.

I've seen how communities have pitched in together after natural disasters or large crime has happened in order to organise clean ups, gather food and supplies for those who need it etc.

Social media has meant that we now have access to people in newsworthy parts of the world and can hear their real life experience instead of relying on (potentially biased) news media reports.

I've seen on social media be a tool for social change, groups of people using social media to organise protests.

On a personal level, I'm 42 years old and I've never been in a relationship, been on a date, or had sex with ANYONE that I hadn't first met online.

Yes, obviously social media can be damaging but it can also connect us to wider groups of people, have better access to information and use it to make change in the world.

it has given power to people who should be the last on earth to recieve it.

many lives have been distroyed for having an opinion which someone else instead of debating that point seeks to ruin that persons life, career etc.

i also think social media is aggressively promoted toward children and those vulnerable in society and the punishment to those who seek to harm the youngest is not strong enough.

It's a tool, but mis-use is rife.

But to ban it? Not really.

The same argument could be had for the telephone, when we got prank calls or heavy breathing perverts.

Hammers are great for DIY but also hurting people.

Removal of the tool may not be the best thing, but regulating the platforms for better safeguarding and more to prevent doomscrolling and dopamine addiction should be done.
