It's been awhile since I've seen a book/reading thread on here. Anyone reading a good book sunbathing in this glorious weather? Or just reading a good book regardless of the weather outside?
I'm currently listening to the audiobook of Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. |

"Firestarter, I have decided to see how long it takes me to read every Stephen King I own in order."
I've only read the thin books by Stephen King. Once you get into IT and The Stand sizes? I'm outta here |

Storyland - A New Mythology of Britain and Tender is the Flesh - Agustine Bazterrica. The latter is starting to feel gratuitous and I'm slightly regretting starting. Much preferred Butter.
I'm waiting for Dream Count to arrive and very much looking forward to that! |

Unruly- David Mitchell - whimsical take on English Medieval History
Mythos - Stephen Fry- warming and delightful take on the Greek myths
Lord of the flies- I just read this every summer for some reason 🤷♂️ |

Yikes, the one about people being cannibals?! Yeah I kept hearing about it and I sailed right past that one!
Also looking forward to new Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie though. |

Oh I love the idea of going back to the same book year after year. I've always wanted to start some kind of tradition like that but it's never stuck. Except, I guess, rereading my favourites when I'm feeling really ill... |

I love books like that too but in this heat I need like, the simplest most straightforward reads |

Oh really? I'm going to look that up, thank you for the heads up! I've always really loved mythos and folklore but rather oddly never British. Didn't really capture my interest, bar Arthurian and that was only really due to uni. After a recent film I've decided to start reading and learning about the stories that have shaped the land and visit various places, the twunt I am. |

Ooh, and are you enjoying it? My kid and I went to see Amadeus last weekend and I think the story of some classical composers would be fascinating to delve into more fully. |

Would this fall under cosy fantasy? Because if so, it's my new favourite lately. |

Absolutely! It deals with a few real life themes and ideas of reflection but definitely deals with it in a cozy way. Look it up and see what you think 😁 |

Oh enjoy. I really loved Fourth Wing. And Iron Flame. But Onyx Storm felt like a tedious slog to me "
Oh no, I've held off reading Onyx Storm as I didn't want to wait for the next book after that.
I've just started reading the Zodiac Academy series, (Caroline Peckham/Susanne Valenti) which was an amazon recommendation after reading the Rebecca Yarros books. I tried Flames of Chaos by A_elia Hutchins but it seemed to just be sex with a bit of story rather the other way around. |

"I'm reading 'The trouble with peace' by Joe Abercrombie right now
I've heard good things about Joe Abercrombie but I've not picked something up by him as yet - are you liking it?"
He's great, I've previously read the First Law trilogy and follow up standalone novels. This current one is book 2 of a newer trilogy... if you like gritty fantasy I'd thoroughly recommend 👌 |

All I seem to read or write these days are technical specifications and procedural documents, used to love reading when I was younger. Now it seems to have become more a necessity than a relaxing pass time |

Yep, that's the one. Kind of. Humans as meat. With the recent atrocity of an autopsy to get Adriana Smith's child out it feels less like a dystopian horror with no relevance to today and more like foreshadowing. That the author revels in. |

I’ve just finished reading I’m Your Huckleberry, Val Kilmer’s autobiography, and have gone back to re-read The Richard Burton Diaries, which I haven’t picked up since it was first published. Burton’s always been an idol of mine.
There are definite parallels between the two — both incredibly gifted, magnetic men who, in their own ways, lived lives that were tragic and largely unfulfilled. Kilmer comes across as spiritual, searching, and deeply sensitive beneath the bravado — always chasing something purer in art. Burton, meanwhile, was brilliant and tortured, his diaries full of intellect, melancholy, and a sense of being worn down by his own myth.
Both men seemed to crave greatness, not just fame. And though they both achieved extraordinary things, there’s this lingering feeling that they never quite found peace. I found reading them back-to-back really moving. |

Val kilmer is mesmerising in the doors .....he literally is Jim Morrison |

I (Max) have done this Daizy. But I alternated between SK and other authors so it didn’t become too much like a chore.
I think there are some great novels in there and a few, post Misery are a little hit n miss.
Happy reading though. You’re in for a treat |

Thanks, I agree with this there are a couple like Insomnia that I am not looking forward to re-reading but his books I love out weigh the ones I don't really like. |

I'll pretty much read anything but sometimes I can be put off by chunky books especially those in a series. My concentration, it's not what it used to be. |

I’ve just read ‘Erebus’ by Michael Palin. It’s not his usual thing as it’s a non-fiction history book, but it tells the story about a ship that was used on Antarctica and Arctic exploration in the Victorian era.
Whilst it’s all about the ship, it also tells the story of the men who served, whom were extraordinarily brave as they headed out in the ice not knowing if they would ever return.
Not a laugh a minute, but really interesting 🤓 |

Not long finished "Jump, Rocky, Jump!", the autobiography of legendary British stuntman Rocky Taylor.
Some is absolutely hilarious (playing the Honey-Monster, working out how to get pissed in Iran, his surprise affair with a VERY acclaimed and sex-mad actress, etc) and in total contrast, his surviving the should-have-been-fatal accident on Death Wish 3 and subsequent recovery and legal trial is harrowing.
It's a great read. |

Murder on the links - Agatha Christie.
I wanted to read all the Poirot books. This is 2nd in the list.
Carl Panzram - Butchering Humanity
Final Truth - Pee Wee Gaskins.
These are short autobiographies written by the actual serial killers. Its very intersting how they see themselves rather than how a psychiatrist sees them. |

Zodiac is good, very slow burn to begin with but as the series progresses 🥵
Adding flames of chaos to my tbr, sometimes I want plot with smut and sometimes I want smut with plot |

Honestly, I was kind of expecting more. I feel like My Secret Garden did it better and that was decades ago. So I’ve not read all of it. I did quite like the imagination and scene setting in the vampire fantasy. |

I didn’t get that far. For me it felt like a slog getting through story after story of women saying what they wanted was men to treat them with basic decency. So it all just made me sad when it should have been sexy. It was the opposite of sexy to me. |

I think for swingers and kinksters it's pretty vanilla/tame
I have to keep reminding myself how 'shocking' they are to a non-swinger /kinkster |

I've reserved Murtagh by Christopher Paolini from my local library, so will start that (tomorrow probably).
It's a YA novel, but the Inheritance Cycle was a part of my childhood so I want to see how the world progressed. |
