Are you successful? Are you really?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *hagTonight OP   Man 37 weeks ago

From the land of haribos.

I dont think that being successful just means being rich, you know, having a big villa in the sun with 2 boats and a garden.

Being successful can also mean so many other things too, such as ones emotions, like being content and happy.

It would be interesting to see if you are successful and how would you define successful as? Do you also agree that it doesnt always mean how rich one is?

I define my success as, being where I want to be and doing what I want to do in that very moment and of course being happy too

I am with you OP. Success is about being able to do what you want on your own terms. You don’t have to be rich, you just have to have life working as you want it. My life works for me.

Secret hideaway in the pennines

I was up till covid and the lockdown.

Years before, I took a rundown closed pub and built it up to being a Camra award winning pub.

I absolutely loved the job, it became a proper community hub like pubs used to be, then the first lockdown came, savings dwindled, then the second lockdown over the Christmas period wiped me out completely, the pub closed, and I lost everything, home business, relationship

Success comes in many forms, and we will all value different things (or at least value their importance differently).

I am successful in some, and less so in others.

The true measure of success , changing the world by putting people in it that will do a better job than we did

Success isn’t about money. You can be successful in voluntary roles/exams etc.

it’s not something I’ve thought much about. I’m happy, that’s more important to me. Success, health, wealth, friends, family etc can all contribute to that I guess.

My first success of the day.

Managed to offload a big dukey that didn’t break. Took effort and concentration, plus avoidance of temptation to snap it off. 💩

Now living in Spain

I guess the easiest definition would be:-

Being happy with your life, with what you are doing and with the people you are doing it with?

For me it was working hard to be able to retire early.

We did just that - sold up and now living our dream life in Spain

Not financially successful at all. I have though traveled and lived the world and a full life I am proud to remember. And if today was to be my last day on this earth, I would have very little regrets as I chose the road I wanted to take.

I have a very full personal and family life. I think I am pretty successful as a result.

My husband made it all the way to manager of pubs and restaurants. Brining in decent money but working all hours and not happy.

Left it all behind and he's a trucker now, slightly less money but better regulated hours and we get to see each other at the end of every working day, bills are paid and we are happy. Now that is what we call success 😌

Bradford and Stockport

(Rainbow here): I've been up and down at various times through my life, but finally feeling that I'm in a good place now. For me it's never been about chasing great amounts of money, I was lucky enough to end up in a career which allowed me to live okay and save for a pension, always tried to keep the view though that I was working so that I could live, not living so that I could work.

Finding that I was trans late in middle age was a hell of a shock both to me and my wife (as she put it, she "didn't sign up to be a lesbian") but we got through that and although our sex life didn't really survive, I never stopped loving her. Her sudden death three years ago was a hammer blow.

Nearly a year now since I first exchanged "hiya" with Moonwitch on a dating site, nine months since our first physical meeting for a dog walk (yes, with her actual doggie, in a park in the daytime - not the other thing that happens in discreet parking locations after midnight 🤣🤣). Living together now, we time share between Yorkshire and Cheshire, we'll probably simplify that arrangement eventually, not a worry at the moment. We are happy ❤️

Success is in the eye of the beholder and relative.

On balance I'd say I was successful, the important things in my life that have not gone as I would have liked have been entirely out of my control.

May as well add mine (Moonwitch).

In the world's eyes, absolutely not. Academic high flier, endlessly told I was heading for great things. Instead, the sweet, loving guy I met at uni and married at 21 turned out to be an abuser. Between that, toxic religion, undiagnosed autism, being pushed to have more kids, the stress and strain of it all wrecking my health, caring responsibilities for a severely disabled relative (that I was glad to do but physically couldn't handle)... Found myself turning 50, medicated up to the eyeballs on an SSRI just to get out of bed. Tried everything to find the help I needed to get away but in vain, was trapped.

But then, to cut a long story short, my abuser left me, and set me free.

Fast forward to now, and I've met my beautiful Rainbow before I'd even thought of a new relationship (I was looking for a shag buddy!).

I'm happy every day (of course life is still life!), and get to do all kinds of things I never thought I'd do, including expressing my queerness at last. I feel loved, peaceful, joyful, and safe. So the way my life is now is way beyond anything I'd hoped for for a long, long time. So I guess that's success of a sort!

This'll be long, because that's how mu autism rolls lol

In a worldly sense then I'm very successful.

At a personal level few would see me as successful: I'm unmarried, live alone, no kids, had more than my share of mental health issues.

I see the success there. After toxic relationships I have found my peace and contentment in my own company. I am recovering from my issues and draw on that success to keep going. I live a life filled with love and joy and even knowing how much it cost me to get to where I am, that feels like success to me.

Threads on this topic always prompt me to post the Bob Dylan quote:

"A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in-between, he does what he wants to do"

It's clearly not resonating with anyone as this is probably the 4th or 5th time I've posted it

I feel I'm pretty successful. Had some great jobs, travelled and enjoyed it.

I have good family around me so all good there

Currently I find my job dull. Im ploughing money into pensions and savings so I can escape as quickly as possible! It's not how life should be spent but my only option currently.

I'm not the kind of person to milk a job, prefer to be busy and work hard but just nothing suitable around so half stuck, half won't leave cos money is good even though I'm bored. I have a very active mind so find this hard.

Id love some suggestions of how to handle this if anyone has any.

Being successful to me means being happy, that means you are actually happy in life. Not just I’m happy because I’m rich or winning awards or something like that.

I think I’m partly successful as my daughter is happy and growing up to be a sweet clever little girl and that means I’m doing my job right for her
