Isn't it amazing how certain driving etiquettes/unspoken rules evolve as time goes by? I recall over 30 years ago Truck drivers would acknowledge (say thanks) via turning on and off their main head lights(whereas car drivers respond by turning on their hazard lights). Nowadays Truckers say thanks via turning on their left and right indicator. I've noticed this gradual change over the past 10 years. Well I'm not a truck driver, but an electrician and I do about 500 miles a week, and I too switched from turning on and off the main head lights to left/right indicator without even realising that the truckers were doing it too. So why did we all do it? And what will we do/change in another 20 years? Bearing in mind vehicle electrification is evolving... |

Morning, Tone.
The next big change will be the introduction of my patented rear view mirror driver communication system, which will enable you to say "thanks for eventually getting out of the way, you clueless dick" to motorists that have eventually changed lanes. |

I particularly like the way that large SUVs have started to show how much they love you on the motorway but roaring upto your rear bumper at 900 mph and staying there. The closer they are the more they care apparently. |

Well soon they'll be able to communicate how much they care when you eventually move over, thanks to my patented driver communication system. |

Not quite an answer to the thread but more of an observation. Did I imagine it or is the motorway etiquette in the north(started to notice about Leeds) different than in the south. Undertaking seemed the norm and lane 1 was just hardly used by anyone except the odd lorry. Anyone else notice this. Or vice versa to northerners notice a difference when they travel south? And a lot more pedal to the metal drivers up north. |

Being an ex trucker, well still drive them as and when, the headlight thing wasnt taught to me, it was always a quick left right left right. But from what ive been told, the headlight thing could blow bulbs easier and also confuses other drivers (not sure how true that is, but ive been in HGVs for about 7 years now)
We dont do hazards, because the truck behind would probably shit themselves and slam on. We use hazards for that reason, to say its a hazard you cant see.
As for the standards of UK driving... some people are selfish, self entitled and dont give a fuck about anyone else. Appreciate thats not everyone, but id say, especially on the roads, its more noticeable and a large amount of people. |

Yes, it is strange that small things like this change but it is good that courtesy is extended to others and signs back to show appreciation. Good manners are what keep our congested roads flowing. I think it is unique to the UK as they don't do these things in the U.S. and certainly not in Europe. |

They definitely don’t want me to move over because they usually do it when there are cars ahead of me and I can’t move left as that lane is busy too. The busier it gets the closer they are. I am thinking they really like groupsex? |

Flashing headlights contravenes the highway code which is why most don't do it anymore.
Flashing to warn of police or speed traps is illegal and carries a £1000 fine and points on your licence.
The only allowed option is to warn other drivers of your presence. |

I just wish folks on ordinary roads would not give me a quick main beam flash when I pull in to let them through especially at night, just come on through and get out of the fooking way I don't want thanks for being sensible. |

Shall we go down the route of the one that cause most arguments....
Im not pushing in, im using the road correctly to get to the merge point and to merge in turn. If you wish to queue for a mile, be my guest, but I dont want to 😂 |

Came here to say this. It works in Europe and America perfectly. But here you get people thinking you’re queue jumping, and always some very wrong, entitled twat who takes it upon himself (always a bloke) to block both lanes, thus making the queue even longer. |

Ah, Thats my bad, I'll put my hands up and admit i misread or musinderstood what he was on about. I thought he meant turning rear lights on and off to say thanks, which is why I got confused as fuck haha. (Dont ask, im having a blonde morning, no coffee or caffine either)
Yeah flash off full beams, to say someone's clear to pull in, not seen many use an indicator to say its clear. |

This sorta thing used to bring out the rage monster in me. I was a trucker/white van man. I’d arrive at destinations wound up and feisty.
These days I’m much more mellow, driving is a pleasure when I do it. My secret to success…….i assume every other driver out there is a tool and will do something stupid in my vicinity and drive defensively. Now I arrive at destinations calm and relaxed. |

Particularly on the M180 which we frequent - it mainly 2 lanes and full of truckers who do this.

This is the way.
Looking at the amount of drivers who can’t do basic things like keep safe distances on motorways I concur that most, if not all, drivers out there are indeed ‘tools’.
Think it used to be 315ft stopping distance at 70 mph according to the Highway Code?
How many people do you see keeping that kind of distance?
Most people seem to struggle with the distance concept even when it’s painted out to them with the two chevron sections.
Driving with a death wish. |

People refusing to stay to the left on motorways or dual carriageways really irritates me. Inside lane clear yet they poodle along at 68mph giving you the pompous vibe of ‘I’m doing the speed limit so I’m staying here and you’re not supposed to be speeding’
Fuck off you cunts… |

We ? Why did WE all do it ? We never.
We use the highway code.
What dick goes clicky clicky right n left with the lights ?
I live on a sharp bend with poor vision. Lovely people flash at me so I can move out - when I don't move out they give me evils and mutter. I always think ......... JUST GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU STUPID FUCKER! and let ME judge when it's safe and let ME drive my own car AND what you are doing breaks all highway code guidance....... daft friggers.
On the other hand..... those who understand when to let others in and when not to are my heroes.
Stop playing at invented rules and thinking you are a knight and a lovely lovely person for letting others in without heed to danger and other others..... |

To he fair, the truck flashing another truck thing is basically letting the other truck overtaking know their back end is clear of hazards, but its still down to driver to decide if its safe.
If I ever stop and flash someone out and they choose not to accept it, or it becomes unsafe etc, i'll just move and give a wave. Basically to acknowledge they used some common sense and not just floor it.
No one drives to the highway code, I dont even think anyone reads it. The amount of additional training ive done as a HGV driver, theres still people on them courses who havent got a clue! |

I saw a request on FB this week for dashcam footage of an apparent incident that took place on a local motorway.
Driver claims that they were in the "fast lane" and an articulated lorry changed lanes suddenly.
They claim that the lorry did not make contact with them but they had to brake so hard they lost control of their vehicle and hit the central barrier causing lots of damage.
They wanted the lorry driver prosecuted for dangerous driving and for not stopping.
Most of the comments started at the "fast lane" phrase and accused the driver of not being in control of their vehicle if a 40 foot lorry and trailer were able to fully change lanes and not make contact with them.
The comments also said that the lorry driver would not have been aware of anything going on behind him and would have had no reason to stop as he hadn't hit anything.
The lorry was accused of speeding away despite the fact hgvs are limited to 56mph. |

Yes technically they aren’t doing anything wrong but really why bother for such a minimal speed gain. You are travelling a whopping one mile extra for every hour you are on the road.
Well worth blocking the left & middle lanes for 5 minutes. |

When I passed my test Indicators were just coming in. You had to do hand signals through an open drivers window
I took my test in December. Boy was it cold, that why driving gloves were popular. |

I’m a truck driver and whenever another truck is overtaking me i ease off so they can get by quicker and pull back in so not to hold the traffic up to much but must say there are alot of truck drivers that don’t think like i do. |

59mph x 10 hrs = 590 miles
56mph x 10 hrs = 560 miles
52mph x 10 hrs = 520 miles
Them extra miles add up, I know my truck done 59 and id be flat at that constant. Because id rather be parked up at a decent truckstop 10 miles down the road then a services |

I do
When I am towing my trailer on dual carriageways or motorways, and I require to overtake a lorry, who may only be travelling slightly slower than me, I pull out, perform the overtake manoeuvre and just when the rearmost part of my trailer clears the front most part of the lorry, the lorry driver will usually flash his headlights to let me know that I can cut back in, once back in front I give a left right left on the indicator just as an acknowledgment of his curtesy.
This has been the norm for decades. |

"Middle lane drivers, who won't go into lane 1,"
"Fast lane" drivers who come close up behind even if you're overtaking someone else, just because they want to get back up to 90 mph.
They're annoying and dangerous ones |

Hey _ude law, yeah motorists hogging lanes and not moving over is rather annoying. However we mustn't get mad at it. After all we're all in the same 🚢 boat. I learnt to stay calm from my mates dad who's a London taxi driver. |

I’m a HGV driver. It amazes me why car drivers need to travel so slow! Often in the middle lane! As heavy goods vehicles we are restricted to 56mph. Why on earth are we being held up by vehicles that are permitted to travel at the legal speed limit of 70mph?!!! We are also forbidden to travel in the third lane. 🤬🤬🤬 |

Yeah I know, it's shocking isn't it? How like 90% of car drivers now drive at around 60 mph. But this only happened since the price of fuel hit the pound per litre mark. But I also noticed HGV's now exceeding 57mph easily. I'm sure Trucks have more power than they use to. |
