Do you lock your front door?
Jump to: Newest in thread
Are you happy for people to wander into your house for whatever reasons including nefarious ones or do you lock the door and reduce the chances of that happening?
Do you get a lot of cold callers or do you have a little sticker on your door saying no cold calling?
Are you inundated with unwanted email or do you use the available spam filter?
Is your phone constantly ringing with unsolicited calls or do you use the TPS?
Why should you have to do any of the above?
In an ideal world you shouldn't have to do any of it and an open door wouldn't be an invitation for someone to nick your telly or use your bathroom.
Salesmen wouldn't be calling at your door to sell you unwanted goods and services and you would only receive relevant emails and phone calls.
We don't live in an ideal world though and anyone who has been using the internet for more than 10 minutes will be aware of how true that statement is.
Every time someone complains on fab about their experience and they are advised to use filters at least one person will ask why they should have to?
To those people, this is your opportunity to tell us about the interesting characters you have found on your sofa because you didn't lock your door and it's a safe space to have a rant about the amount of spam emails you are getting because you don't have time to reply to them all. |

Not happy with anybody just wandering through the front door (obviously?)
I’ve got an extended family member who thought it was ok to just come in whilst also not living here which pissed me off, so I started locking it.

Generally keep the front door open, as people knock before coming in and the dogs warns us of people around.
Do do remember being in Ireland many years ago staying with family during the 90s and it seemed all doors were open and neighbors just came and went to each others houses at all times of the day, if someone's light was on it was a sign to pop over and have a drink. |

We lived in a community with fully unlocked doors but I prefer to lock.
I don't do visiting cold callers and tell them so, as the sign disappeared. I use the TPS and get very very few. Likewise, spam texts, I report and block. |

That may have happened in more rural areas of Ireland but it certainly never happened in my lifetime where I was born and raised. Doors were always closed and locked. |

I live in a rural area now where they are very few people wandering about. I never lock my doors in the daytime, I don't always lock the door when I nip out either. For some reason I usually lock the doors when it gets dark, but I sometimes forget. |

Been burgled in the middle of the day, just opened door, stole a bag and keys but was disturbed by my
children as they were in the garden with my mum. A neighbour saw him look in the window then try the door. Since moved now very rural but always keep doors locked at all times now unless expecting visitors. |

By the way, the locked door analogy is really just that.
I'm more curious why in this day and age people are so stubborn about not using what is available to them to make things much simpler.
Do some people find it more cathartic to complain to others about the number of cold callers they get than they would if they put up a sticker and solved that problem immediately?
If you are being constantly disturbed by neighbours or random people wandering into your home is it better to whine about it or would pushing that door closed not be an easy solution?
I see people on social media every day complaining about situations that they should be fully in control of but decide to put more effort into whining on Facebook than it would take to resolve with the turn of a key or by ticking a box.
This is also true on fab where there are numerous tools available to reduce most issues but some people get very angry over having to use them.

My front door can't be opened from the outside without a key, unless I physically leave it open.
But having lived in London until my late 30s I was programmed to keep doors and windows locked at all times, and that habit has follow me for the rest of my life.
I no longer have a land line and my mobile filters out spam calls. I live a beautifully peaceful life that includes only the visitors and callers that I care to invite in. |

🤣
It's surprising how tranquil our lives are with all these easily available precautions against unwanted contact enabled.
Wait! If only there was a way we could apply this to our fab interactions |

All the time with the area I'm in. Wasn't long ago that a neighbour had car taken in space of 30 seconds because they just opened door, took keys and escaped with car. |

I lock the door at night, Y not so much..
Woke one morning to find she hadn't even shut it after a night out with the girls and a neighbours cat happily curled up on the couch.
That said she leaves every light on in the house and often known to leave her car keys in the car too.. 🤷😄
Good job I fitted a ghost to it 😉 |

I'll use another apt analogy.
If you are about to step on an escalator and it suddenly stops, do you start shouting for someone to be fired or do you walk up the steps right beside it?
The latter requires common sense, the former is becoming all too common. |

I bought a door bell cam because you can't see who's there from the living room. It rarely gets charged though
I always lock the front door because we have young kids. BUT... We went to do a food shop the other day and not only was the back door left unlocked, it was WIDE OPEN. Mr forgot to lock up after opening it for the cats to come in for food
Funnily enough, I had the first cold call on my phone in ages today! |

Common sense isn't that common anymore.
As for locking my doors I only do that when I go out somewhere or when I go to bed. The dogs and the gates shut keep unwanted visitors out
Funnily enough just like my filters on here I suppose. |
