Workington

Seems that been a few film related threads on here recently, last being Genre ones.

So had me pondering. In the world of remakes, reboots and superhero films.. how about the classics.

Anyone have a few favourite or go to films from the classcis (pre 1960s)

For me has to be;

1963 The Iron Maiden

1955 Lady Killers

1953 Titfeild Thunderbolt

1943 San Demetrio London

1940 The Stars Look Down

Are a few of mine.

I could list 100's of classic pre-1960's movies.

I much prefer old black and white films to a lot of modern cinema.

Amongst my favourites would be;

Casablanca

Double Indemnity

12 Angry Men

The Big Sleep

Touch of Evil

Gilda

La Dolce Vita

The Maltese Falcon

Night of the Hunter

Laura

North By Northwest

From Here To Eternity

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

To Catch A Thief

Smiles of a Summer Night

Citizen Kane

The Postman Always Rings Twice

Sweet Smell of Success

Rear Window

Dial M For Murder

Very much 'scratching the surface' here!

I think people need to research when film's are made pre 1960's , people are mentioning films from the 70's 80's and never

THAT SAID.

Young Frankenstein is a classic film made in the genre as the OP asked.

I do love classic films.

The Hill.

Night of the Demon.

The 39 step's.

The 3rd man.

Of those already mentioned, '12 Angry Men' gets my vote (it's not #5 on IMDB's top 250 movies for nothing!!)

...and following a conversation last night about films that make you cry (another thread for another time!), last night I forgot to mention 'It's a Wonderful Life'. Mandatory annual Christmas watch to get the tears going!

"Withnail and I"

without doubt, a classic...

But, made in the 80's and set at the turn of the 60's/70's.

Deserves a thread of it's own to be fair!

I can picture it in my mind, I was quite a few years younger and it was a black-and-white film featuring James Cagney, what I remember was one word in the title angel, and I remember a priest who was his friend telling him as a prisoner to act scared before his execution

I was surprised how much I liked the original King Kong. Dates as the effects are, it's still a great film.
