Don’t worry it’s not a BBW thread.
A sparrowhawk has just been to try and pluck a little sparrow from the squirrel proof bird feeder cage. Happily it failed once I opened the window and scared him away, but not without the poor mite losing some feathers and a having a close brush with death.
I know they’ve gotta eat too but crikey it did love the challenge of trying to get in that feeder.
I feel like I’ve been grooming the little ones for it now.
Any one have any big bird tales? |

"When I was 8, a sparrowhawk landed on the bin in the front garden, obviously startled. Mum found me out the front stroking it and hugging it 🤣"
They are beautiful- didn’t realise they likes a snuggle though. I shall take your word for it. They’re a bit beaky for my tastes. |

I don't have an actual large avian tale, or tail for that matter, but I thought I would wing it by stating that I have seen some Cassowaries when visiting Queensland, Australia.
Seeing a Kakapo in New Zealand is still on my bucket list.
(The Australian equivalent of a badger is a Tasmanian Devil btw).

I had to google Cassowaries - I’d love to see these. What brilliant looking birds. I love the fact that they wouldn’t look out of place in Jurassic Park. Australia and New Zealand are on my list for future trips. |

We feed the birds in our back garden.
One day we heard a lot of noise and there was a thud on the patio doors..I looked into the patio and there was a sparrow hawk holding a thrush down on the slabs.
I opened the door and the hawk flew off leaving behind a rattled but seemingly unharmed little thrush.
We gave it some water and moved it to a sheltered spot in the vegetable bed.
About ten minutes later it reappeared and flew off.
Fir months afterwards that little thrush would often follow me around outside. I guess it felt safer feeding etc if I was around! |

I love a good ending. We only get one or two Thrushes here. Such beautiful birds. I’m glad you acted fast and that it didn’t forget you! |

Not so much a big bird but a smaller one that’s got big bird energy
A peregrine falcon uses our yard for its hunting grounds
quite often you’ll see pigeons being pulled out of the sky. I’ve been hit by one of the flappy fuckers before too |

Ouch. Flappy fuckers made me chuckle more than it should have. We apparently have a lot of them here as they nest in the old cotton mill chimneys - so much so there’s a statue in their honour. I’ve never seen one close up though. |

Back to the thread topic I regularly share a working space with Buzzards, just a couple of weeks age there were 16 of them within 40 yard radius of me, some on the ground, some gliding twenty/thirty feet in the air. |

Was raking leaves and a hawk landed in garden with Starling. A nearby Magpie was screeching at the sight. I could not let nature take it's course and shooed hawk away leaving Starling to fly and live another day. The hawk flew off followed by Magpie and a Seagull. Garden drama! |

I actually had to catch one last year as it had been tricked by a pigeon and ended up stuck in the building. Safety glasses and welding gauntlets involved but I got it out the door again 😂 they’re very pretty up close |

Glad to hear of the good end to the tale. Starlings are gorgeous when the sun catches them. I often have upwards of 20 in the garden in spring and love watching them squabbling amongst each other. |

"I got chased for miles on a push bike by a freeking goose onse. Though things are evil basteders"
I can’t believe the goose was on a bike.
I made the mistake of trying to feed geese that were on my balcony when I lived near a lake. Couldn’t get rid of them after. |

If your ginna feed any bird feed a magpie. I had a pair that i started feeding and they began bringing me things they found. Then built a nest in a tree next to my house. Was amazing to see just how smart they are |

I feel like they probably hate snuggles, but a dazed bird and a determined child = beaky snuggles. |

How lovely and generous of them to leave gifts. What have you received so far? |

"We have red kites around me, watching the crows take them on in an aerial fight is scary. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of either of them."
Me either. I saw a red kite last weekend. They are so graceful in flight. |
