Has anyone watched Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein on Netflix yet?
I really enjoyed it. Beautifully crafted and emotionally resonant. The cinematography is exquisite, as well as the performances.
He does gothic horror so well! |

I watched it last night.
I’m a massive Mary Shelley geek/fan girl.
It’s still not perfect. But. Closest to the book and heart of it that I’ve seen. A few changes I could have lived without.
But on the whole beautiful and heartfelt. Jacob Elodi was amazing. Charles Dance was Charles Dance.
I’m not sure anyone actually could recreate Shelley’s vision in this day and age. |

Thoroughly enjoyed it; but as rare a thing as it is to say with epics like this, I thought it could have been longer! Quite a few times I felt like the plot lines jumped ahead with little or no explanation of how or why.
I wonder if there's a Directors cut coming in future?! 🤔 |

As opposed to Nosferatu which could have been 30 minutes shorter 😂 |

Watched it the other night & it's fantastic. Really strong on performances, sets, costumes, monsters.. all amazing.
It's really over the top - lavish - in dialogue & acting without ever getting too silly. The Victors story/Creatures story structure was interesting.
Another thing that was really over-the-top was the genuinely disgusting anatomy at the beginning. As I get older, I'm getting a bit more squeamish and almost found it too much and was close to switching it off - it was that disturbing. Del Toro usually manages to squeeze a visceral autopsy or dissection in his films and in Frankenstein it takes up most of the first quarter of the it. So much blood and gore.
I leaned into it and figured that it was probably all practical effects and that took the edge off. The team should most definitely win the Oscar.
I'm waffling. I thought it was great & had things to say. |

"Jacob Elordi was a stand out. I'd only really seen him in Saltburn so wasn't expecting his performance to be so brilliant and heartbreaking. "
At 6' 6, he'd stand out in most situations.
Does he drink any bath water in this one? |

My daughter and I went to see it this evening at the Curzon in Oxford. Beautiful adaptation. So atmospheric, and so heartbreaking. This is what gothic horror is about. Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi were both magnificent.
Del Toro has delivered a gorgeous film.

I have watched
Beautifully shot, really good acting in parts. I also think like you, or somebody else said its potentially the closest to the original text that any movie has managed. I particularly like the alternative views of the story, which is rarely translated on to screen.
I actually didn't like it the first watch, didn't hate it. But when I watched it a seocnd time, I really liked it |

Thanks for this top TV tip OP, I'll check it out later.
Frankenstein always reminded me of the T'Pau song China in Your Hands; great lyrics, fantastic song and I just love the Sax solo at the end - we all need more sax in our lives 😉🎷

"I thought it lacked atmosphere and any sense of horror, was too long, and pandered to the audience by explaining outright any subtext. Apart from that it was brilliant."
I don't think it was meant to be horror. He says at the beginning you told your story (to Dr Frankenstein), now I'm going to tell mine. We're seeing it from his point of view, learning about emotions. |

I watched it on the big screen. The epic scale of some of the scenes and sets were impressive. Good performances from the lead actors. Only the cgi wolves were a bit off, but they didn't detract from the overall impression. |
