Sir Idris Elba
Jump to: Newest in thread
I've just realised after a bit of Googling:
I'm both taller and younger than Cillian and Tom - I'm younger than Idris but he is a fair bit taller than me.
Would a Brummie James Bond work? Roger Moore was English with an RP accent, Sean Connery was Scottish, Timothy Dalton was Welsh, George Lazenby was Australian, Pierce Brosnan was Irish, Daniel Craig was English with a non-descript accent...
Shakun not sturred? |

The only reason I think Sir Idris shouldn't be Bond is he's probably too old to start now. He's 53 which is the age Daniel Craig was when his last Bond movie was released. Only Roger Moore at 57 was older when making his final Bond movie, and he was too old.
As far as being black goes, Bond is a fictional character with no integral part of the back story that requires him to be white. |

I wanted to make a remake of a French spy movie, Idris would still be perfect to play in despite his age. The movie was about a retired spy sent undercover to a country in Africa to take out a general/dictator. However, while undercover the spy is betrayed by his government who have made a financial deal with the dictator, and the spy is too deep undercover to call him back, so they rat him out to stop him from completing his mission. He is caught, beaten and dr@gged to confess and sent to hard labor where all the prisoners beat on him for being a hit man. He escapes to go back home years later to seek revenge and finish his job. |

Depends - If you’re ok with colour-blind casting, then yeah Idris is perfect. But I’m a Cannon Queen
I like my adaptations as close to the source material as possible.
I don’t know why you can’t just have a movie about a black 00’ Agent & not have him be James Bond 🤷🏽♂️
MY PITCH? Do a “Buddy Spy” movie, where Bond teams up with another guy. Have them be rivals at first, then grow a begrudging respect.
☝🏽Then…if the audience is receptive. Give him his own movie. |

What is there in Bond canon that means he needs to be white? |

I’d quite like Jamie Bell as bond great actor came a long way since billy Elliot.
If Idris done it they could use the same cgi back aging they done with Samuel L Jackson in the marvel films for a couple then give him a last mission/ come out if retirement film without it as the last one |

The problem with Idris is he's in the same mould as many other actors of the "action" genre he is very one dimensional, he basically plays the same character in everything he does, a tough loner who is really gruff and intense with vulnerability.
Which is basically what Daniel Craig has been doing so casting Idris is not going to give bond anything new.
I'd like to see a younger face playing bond and I think Connor Swindells would be brilliant . |

No, I'd rather someone just told me why. If there's a good reason I'll change my view. |

"What is there in Bond canon that means he needs to be white? " Why does Blade need to be black? He too is a fictitious character. Surely he could be played by any race.
I don't fully disagree with your argument, but when it's the other way around, so many people take great offense. It's tired and lazy to swap a race or gender of a pre-established IP, as opposed to just making a whole new character. I thought Atomic Blonde with Charlize was great, yet that movie did not make a franchise. Unless it's a well known character or total freak thing like John Wick, producers won't put as much money into anything new. They just recycle and "change up" famous things to sell them as new. |

Blade was white in the original comics as was Nick Fury (Hasselhoff played him in TV movie), both could be made any race. |

In the books he’s described of being of Scottish background, with grey eyes, a scar & a “cruel” looking face.
BUT TO PLAY DEVILS ADVOCATE ☝🏽
Hardly any fictional character had been adapted to the screen accurately.
PSYCHO - Norman Bates was fat, balding & middle-aged in the book.
FORREST GUMP - Was supposed to be a big dude like John Goodman |

I agree casting Idris just because he's black rather than casting him because he can really bring something to the role which I don't think he could. If people really want a black actor then Chiwetel Ejiofor would in my opinion make a far better bond and is an outstanding actor. |

Blade wasn’t white 😄 His first appearance was in Tomb Of Dracula. And he was very much black.

James Bond was a white Naval Commander before joining MI6 and becoming 007.
Why should that be changed?

But rather than a race discussion can we agree who would make a good Bond bringing something new to the role whilst sticking to the core principles of the character. But before anybody suggests it NOT a woman, nothing against women or anything but Bond is a man simple.
It'd be like casting a man as Miss Marple. |

I've read the original books and while I don't believe in changing things just for the sake of changing there are a lot of things about the character that are of their time and definitely wouldn't be acceptable now.
For me the biggest problem with Idris is that he is Idris and it would be impossible to watch a Bond movie and see him as anything other than Idris.
A lesser known face would be much better and I think a good option for Amazon would be to return to the source material and have Bond in his mid 30s in the late 1950s. The character was born in 1920.
Take out some of the more offensive stuff and get back to basics. |

Agreed, changing gender would be a different character.
My choice is Callum Turner. |

I agree. A new Bond should not be a particularly well known actor. None of them have really been household names before they took the role. |

Not bringing it back to race, but googled Blade and yes, I was wrong he was black in the comics, but mixed race (and originally British?) but has often been drawn with lighter skin tones (because being half vampire makes your skin pale apparently) and mistaken for a white character, including in the 90s Spider man cartoon where you would not know he was meant to be black. |

Most actors did back the. Because they had backgrounds, previous lives, children, marriages, served in wars.
There were none of the straight into acting school luvvies that are around now.
Plus - only the women used moisturiser |

I believe the new studio execs said they want to take it back with someone in 20s after they obtained rights this year "
Someone in their 20's is to young to play Bond. Being in the 2nd world war as a Naval Commander and then going on to MI6 as 007 would'nt have been achieved by a 20 something guy.
Just would'nt suit the character. |

When they cast Daniel - they deliberately went back to book one.
Rough, scarred, broken. Someone you’d completely miss on the street before dying.
Whilst everyone instantly thinks of Connery, Moore, etc none were what Flemming created. Especially Moore, Brosnan and Dalton.
Whoever it is needs to be that person who will watch someone bleed out, walk away and dissolve into the crowd.
Whether they also dissolve ladies panties or not will only matter to the accountants. |

Ironically Fleming stated after warming to Connery they his portrayal was cannon and put in the Scottish heritage as gesture to his friendship with him after initially not liking him for the role . |

The Wire is one of my favourites! I didn't know who Idris was at the time and also couldn't believe he was British.
McNaulty too to a degree but I know many Americans said his accent wasn't great. |

If they want a one dimensional 'Landan Geezarrrr' actor, might as well save a few quid and just get Danny Dyer in- pretty much exactly the same result and fairly sure he can find time in his busy schedule from trying act act menacing to the melts leaving glasses on his table. |
