Somewhere In The Ether…

Ow do good folks once again 😃👋🏻

I’ve always been absolutely fascinated by unsolved world mysteries; The fate of the crew of the Mary Celeste, the numerous historical disappearances within the infamous Bermuda Triangle and that most curious of all phenomena - why only one sock returns after one puts a pair into a washing machine… 😵‍💫

With the above in mind:

Q1. What is your personal favourite of world mysteries?

Q2. Well, this is the internet after all, so facts be damned! - Give your explanation as to what actually happened/the truth behind said mystery (the more convoluted and/or humorous the better) 😜👍🏻

Lids multiply but containers vanish... and you end up with a load of lids that dont fit any of the containers you have.

Lids are clingy and dont want to leave the drawer.

Containers on the other hand are always out looking for something to fill them up and get sidetracked and never come back.

Ah ha! This sounds an entirely plausible explanation. Somewhere out there, there is doubtless a land filled with these ever wandering containers, forever searching to be satisfied 😜

Aliens, Nero good sir; ‘Tis most surely due to the nefarious interference of aliens.

They clearly see you as a man of fine taste and subsequently see fit to steal the ladies you have so chosen for hybrid/cross breeding purposes 👍🏻😜

"I thought the Bermuda Triangle "mystery" had been debunked?"

I believe it has - although I’ve read more than one logical explanation (seismic activity releasing subterranean gases for instance).

Another theory has it that statistically, there are in fact no more disappearances within the area than anywhere else.

….I’m still going with angry Atlantian’s rising from the sea bed though 😜👍🏻

Now this is an intriguing one; in fact there have been actual studies on it.

…..But the truth is alien intervention, surely? 😜

Clearly, he is an extraterrestrial 😱

"I read a theory about the Marie Celeste that involved ergot fungus growing on their bread causing them all to jump over board. 🤔"

Ergot poisoning has also been listed as a possible cause for the wide hysteria that was experienced in Salem in 1692 which lead to the infamous Witch Trials there.

Even today, in some countries in the world, there have been similar widespread bouts of hysteria break out due to the said grain poisoning (there was one in Ethiopia a few years back)

Funnily enough, there was another explanation put forward as regards the fate of the crew: According to a ‘discovered’ journal of a chap claiming to have been a stowaway on the doomed ship, the captain had ordered a platform/extension to be built onto the back of the vessel for his daughter (as I recall) to play upon.

The account went on to say that a few crew members went for a swim one day when there was no wind in the sails and promptly got attacked by sharks(!!!) Their subsequent terrified screams caused the rest of the crew to rush to the back of the ship, whereupon the newly (and apparently rather poorly!) constructed platform that they all congregated upon gave way and they likewise, became victims of the assembled sharks feeding frenzy 😱😱😱

"toast falls off plate or work surface and always lands butterside down. Only happens if unexpected so not one you can deliberately try "

That happens because the centre of gravity is lower on the butter side - the butter side is heavier. You’ll sleep better now you know.

I was too!

I remember there was a case in Ebbw Vale that was in a couple of books I had. That felt a bit close to home, and a slightly surprising place to be the centre of such mystery.

It fascinated and terrified me; I spent a year or two convinced I would walk in the kitchen one day and find my parents had combusted!

Marie Celeste -it would be nice to think they were all charmed by beautiful mermaids and jumped ship.

The modern mystery - why do humans prove how much they are poisoning the planet and just ignore it, plod towards extinction. Then marvel how "intelligent" they are in exploring space.... by littering that too! Answer; we are just avatars in a computer game being played by greater beings and haven't realised it. GAME OVER

This is a particularly interesting one; Indeed the

dichotomy between our technological genius, juxtaposed with our ostensible complete disregard for the environment we live as a species, in is utterly baffling.

Could we really be in a Matrix-like simulation?

Aliens….I’m blaming aliens again 😜👍🏻

Bigfoot

There are so many Americans who go out hunting with numerous rifles but not one Bigfoot has been shot and killed as proof !

Also the bluffs creek video has since been confirmed as a hoax , one by the costume designer the other by the person who was told to wear it.

So, are they out there ? 🤔

Cryptozoology is an absolutely fascinating subject. It’s strangely comforting to believe that there could be such magnificent creatures roaming around somewhere out there in the vast wilderness.

Which reminds me; I watched a film as a kid on the subject of Bigfoot called, The Legend Of Boggy Creek. It scarred the absolute hell out of me! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

"The Colombian ancient flying machines. A bit too accurate a depiction of machinery to not be based on real life."

They are absolutely incredible aren’t they? Scientists have always been arrogantly quick to poo-poo them as merely stylised model depictions of flying insects of the time, but one has only to cast the most casual of glances upon them to see the startling likeness of modern aircraft.

Did the artists depict actual psychic visions of the future?

It’s highly tempting to say the least.

"toast falls off plate or work surface and always lands butterside down. Only happens if unexpected so not one you can deliberately try "

Can be readily explained by considering some physics: The mass of the layer of butter on one side moves the centre of gravity towards that side of the slice, and the buttered side has less aerodynamic drag compared to the rough texture of the cut surface of the bread. (Similar to the improvement in speed attainable in a racing yacht or dinghy with a well-polished hull compared to one encrusted with and barnacles).

That combination of effects ensures that the slice will not tumble randomly, but will preferentially turn butter side down as it falls.
