Driverless cars heading for London

Stalybridge

London has approved driverless car trials this year, the same models, manufacturer and operator currently utilised throughout parts of California.

I was in Santa Monica a few months ago and watched one cause havoc by stopping/starting randomly across a busy junction, several ignore traffic signs and one reversing to avoid a pedestrian crossing, nearly hitting an actual pedestrian behind it; absolutely bonkers.

That said, they are all over San Francisco and seem to work well given they apparently had a year of “learning” the roads before going live.

Would you hail one?

Any cabbies on here, what are your thoughts?

I wouldn't trust this technology at this point... maybe in 50 years, if I'm still alive...but at this point I feel a human's intuition is still required when driving

This technology, while impressive, hasn't been taken up in the UK. Destined to fail, in my opinion 🤓🥷

I followed a driver less taxi in Vegas last year and definitely not a smooth ride as it was following the pavement side line and it was going through road works.

Fuck no! This is scary shit.

The technology still doesn't work properly, look at Google Maps. And my last car had park assist on it, fucking useless. I turned it off and parked myself - better and quicker.

No way is it right to be driverless cars yet. Just another way to get at working class cab drivers

Are they cheaper than normal cabs? If not, then what's the point? I would use them if they were half the price, but somehow I don't think so.

It will be the case of mega corps putting hard working people out of a job.

It is only a matter of time i guess before these will be the norm. As above,i dont think the tech is quite there yet so I wouldnt use one.

Too many issues at the moment regarding how the tech deals with weather and roads works, for example.

I'm sure knobhead Khan will find a way to tax the companies and the users and anyone that likes or even dislikes the idea. If he can generate monuey from it, it will happen, regardless of safety

I've heard they're pretty bad at driving, but then again so is the standard of many oblivious drivers these days

Yeah, I'd jump in one.

I've seen some of the drivers in London, so they can't be any worse. Traffic moves slowly, so the tube and walking would still remain my first options.

I agree. Anyone who wants to drive in central London needs their head examined.

As a car enthusiast I truly hate the idea of driverless cars 😂 Why remove the joy of driving a car?

i was actually looking into this a week or so ago and the future is going to be mental.

So, if you are in a vehicle that is driving for you if it detects a possible accident you it will give you a warning and you then have 10 seconds to take control of the vehicle. Should the vehicle be involved in an accident before the 10 seconds is up you will not be liable for an insurance claim, it guilt will be with the insurance company and the car manufacturer.

Also looking forward there is a small possibility that rather than having to take a driving test all that would be required would be some kind of a safety test, whereby you would be taught about taking control in the 10 second accident window.

Glad I am an old fart and wont be affected by most of this lol

One thing driving in American cities designed for the motor vehicle. Wide straight roads etc.

Totally different conditions in the UK.

I'd take a possible slight increase in fare, for using people employed to drive me.

I'm also unsure what the legal liability is etc, if involved in damaging accidents yet. I'd hate it to be assumed that humans are always wrong and the AI must be correct/innocent.

Appreciate it may be a safer space for some but going to create mass unemployment for some with less academic skills.

The worst would probably be Tesla, as they only operate with cameras. I think - fine if you get clear visibility and weather. Not great in foggy San Francisco or misty, UK and drizzle etc. Plus we're not great with roadworks planning etc - I can imagine a few cabs could jam up a road that's already roadworks blocked

Reading the title of this thread I thought it was going to be an early alert along the lines of "Klingons off the starboard bow" or there was a mass invasion of London by driverless cars..

If a pedestrian stands in front it, the car will stop. Thieves will have a field day with them, just like all the line bikes near to where I live that have been stripped of their wheels and batteries

It’s the future.

They’ll easily be a point in next ten years or so where they’ll be safer than average driver.
