Mr here.
I’ve recently got ‘in’ to swimming. I need to be honest, I absolutely hate it. It’s an absolute chore to get through.
I do feel the benefit though so I get on with it.
Any hints or tips to make it more enjoyable? |

Likewise. It's pretty much the only exercise I can do but its painful and boring.
Yet to find good enough earplugs that block the screaming children. The pool is freezing and the changing rooms inadequate. |

I'm assuming you swim in a local pool that's roped off and you go up and down up and down up and down ..... with all the other miserable fuckers......
try and get into a public swim where it's not roped off with everyone mindlessly going up n down up n down .... you can stop when you want, swim underwater, flip onto your back , tread water and generally piss about ... much more fun than going up n down up n down up n down |

Love to swim I have a membership near by in Petersfield
Early swimming is great it’s quite social too if you want it to be
Vary what you do
Look at some water aerobics and have a go it’s great for stretching
I love to sea swim but our coast did have blue flags but sadly they are brown
Keep it up it’s a great way to enjoy a five star sport
Buy a float goggles are so important I think
Love it I hope you will totally love it too |

Break it into chunks.
I do a lot of swimming and it’s mostly long distance.
The first 1500m are absolutely dull, it feels laboured and my breathing doesnt settle in. I’ve found breaking it into chunks helps massively, so when doing any distance I’ll break it into 500m or 1000m “blocks”
Seems once I’m past the 1500m mark my body goes into, right we’re swimming mode and it becomes quite calming where I can just switch off.
Most swims are between 3k - 5k and it becomes a game of seeing what time i can get which also helps motivate.
Finding a training buddy helps a lot too |

It really is boring and you either get in the way or others get in your way .....just makes it a stress.
My pool does public swims and I go to those if I can. Check if yours does them.
What is wrong with your technique - according to you ? |

Something about swimming. I can do it in that I can repeat laps successfully (ie I don't drown) but I don't consider myself a competent swimmer. But when I suggested in conversation I might take tuition the response was "but you can swim". I'm probably about as good as swimming as I am at dancing (not good at all) but if I said I was contemplating dance lessons nobody who ever saw me dance would raise an eyebrow. I wonder why swimming lessons are considered appropriate only fit those who can't stay afloat? |

Let’s just say there are a lot of moving parts, without much actual motion.
Up until the tail end of last year I’d never really swam, and couldnt do breaststroke at all. So took it upon myself to try it, I think I Probaly do my own version of it now, but everyone zooms past me in the lanes. As I say, I’d get an A for effort and energy out in, but nought much else 🤷♂️ |

"I'm a swim teacher, I teach to all ages.
what kind of swimming? pool? open water?
Pool.
My technique is terrible, so that may be part of the lack of enjoyment I suppose."
Watch some videos on technique if you can’t get to a club.
Easiest things to work on to improve quickly is stop kicking as much. Work on 2-beat kicks which is two kicks for every stroke. Your legs take so much energy and give very little propulsion
Bilateral breathing so breathe on both sides, alternating every 3 strokes.
Body rotation, snapping your hips can do so much of the work for you which saves energy and gives forward propulsion

I am qualified to teach swimming.
I would suggest looking online for a BLABT pdf. for front crawl.
All it means is BODY, LEGS , ARMS, BREATHING , TIMING - practise one at a time when you go to the pool. They will eventually all come together like magic.
It might sound daft but lie on the kitchen table and practise ( or a low bench if you have one )
Use YOU TUBE to learn blabt through watching others
Good luck |

Get some lessons, improve your technique
Then when you swim you will find you are concentrating on how your body is moving rather than anything else
Once you have a rhythum you will find you are flying, it becomes zen at that stage (until some idiot in the wrong speed lane continually gets in your way)
I love swimming...this may be obvious 😁

Once you get your fitness up, you can make it more interesting by breaking it up doing timed sets and drills, working on stroke technique.
Trying to beat previous times it's endless to be honest.

I got peer pressured into doing an Ironman a few years ago. Completed the 3.8km swim 5 months after my 1st swimming lesson. Still absolute hate swimming. Especially in the pool where every grandmother is faster than me😭 |

No tips I'm afraid, only empathy. It is tedious. |

Personally, I’ve always found with exercise the better I get at something the more I enjoy it. That goes hand in hand with starting to feel and see the benefits. Not sure how long you’ve been swimming for but stick with it if it’s early days. |

Very early days. Not something I’ve ever enjoyed doing, so not really got into it.
Will get a set of headphones, great idea to make it more interesting.
Also downloaded the breathing/technique pdf and have Mrs critiquing my form on the kitchen floor 🤣 |

I find it difficult to do laps. Boring and repetitive. The noise is too much so I usually aim for a quiet time.
I play a game where I throw an object in to the deep end and let it sink. Then I have to swim there and dive down to retrieve it. It could be a spare set of goggles, a swim cap, nose plug etc. |

Just an update. Two things really.
Over past week or so I think there has been some sort of change, don’t know if it is form or breathing, but definitely feeling that things are getting easier.
Secondly, I bought waterproof headphones. Only used them the once but the music definitely helps keep my mind occupied.
Cheers everyone. |

We used to swim regularly at a nearby hotels leisure club. If we timed it right we'd be the only ones in the pool and sauna, it was heavenly, like having your own pool. Sadly it closed in COVID and never reopened. I hate public swimming pools so we stopped going |

In what can only be described as a seismic shift. The waterproof headphones have made a huge difference to my (whisper it) enjoyment of swimming.
So much so that I got up and out the house early today to do a swim before whatever we get up to today.
Didn’t think it through though, swimming pool
Obviously closed for Good Friday 🤦♂️ |

I haven’t seen it mentioned in the thread, but I had some lessons a couple of years ago with a Total Immersion coach. It’s a really effortless style and has helped made swimming more enjoyable for me. There’s plenty of videos on YouTube.
Similar to some others, I much prefer open water swimming🌊 |

LOVE swimming.
One of the few places you can escape a smartphone these days - recommend doing some deep breathing before starting and just focusing on each motion - not time, speed or number of lengths. I find it pretty meditative so maybe approach it that way, an opportunity to give the brain a rest (while improving the body!). Good luck. |
