Such an American thing but my school did do one, but I didn’t go. They seem to be more of a “thing” these days.
Who here had one? If not, what did you do when you left school?
Mr AC’s whole year went to the local nightclub where they got an under 18 stamp on the way in so they couldn’t get served (but were allowed in). |

I had formals, but they were a very similar concept to proms.
I also had a muck up day - the last day of school, by tradition, the final year could do anything they wanted (pranks and mischief shy of criminal activity. One school near me, they broke into the principal's office, took all the furniture, and put it all on the roof in the same configuration. They also returned it all after everyone had had a good laugh) |

Speaking of booze...
Rather than grades (AAA or whatever), my final score came as a percentage (the percentage you did better than - including the people who'd dropped out two years earlier. It's complicated).
Below... 30 I think, they didn't give out the actual number, they gave a star. It was colloquially known as the mystery mark, and it was apparently given because to actually tell you how dumb you were might hurt people's feelings.
The urban legend was that a mystery mark, the culmination of two years of school, could be exchanged for one beer in select pubs. |

Prom … bloody hell another Americanism giving us more delight but cost
It’s daft
I went to work in California before I went to university and where I was working, prom was a huge thing …
Great for the jocks and those with confidence but bloody awful for the shy ones
I went to court and was prosecuted for driving a Limo into a college quadrangle
Small beer of course but 40 hrs litter picking in an orange overall bloody prom ..

One is a very good friend since we first met at school, another was in my economics lectures at college and another got a job in the same place as me around 20 years ago.
I've just remembered a 4th who's a gp and treated one of our kids.
I'll be honest I wouldn't be interested in seeing any of them anyway 😝 |

I left in 2008 and I’ve only seen one since!

I think we were the second year to have a prom, although I don’t think it was called that back then. I didn’t attend, didn’t see the point of getting dressed up and spending the evening with a load of people who bullied me.
I instead spent the evening with my group of friends from another school and had a great night |

We had a leavers do. This was 96. Wasn't a "prom" as they were not a thing then. But we got to dress up in suits and dresses. We drank (although not supposed to) with our teachers who I'm pretty sure were just glad to see the back of us. As with any 90s party there was a lot of 'pulling' fingering on the dance floor, muddy knees and lots of great memories. |

Left school in early 00's. We had a prom. We did the whole t shirt signing thing too.
Our prom was a boat party. Although the boat never sailed.
In college I had a prom in a town hall.
In university I had a boat party. The boat sailed around the Thames. |

Finished school in '01. No formal events and or shirt signings. Just did the exams and left. Friends had exams on different days, so there were no formal goodbyes. I still remember walking out of the school gates for the last time. One of the best feelings. Although I did return later very briefly to collect my results and many years later I was planning to attend a class reunion, but the school closed.

I had a prom. Still have my prom dress too, I think.
It was in a local hotel and I remember my friends bullied me into attending. I didn’t recognise a lot of my year group, took a few pictures with friends and left early 😬 |
