I may be completely wrong here but he couldn’t be Italian as such because it wasn’t actually a country for another hundred years. You could argue he was Genoese if his family were from the island but the French took Corsica in lieu of debts to them just before he was born, so officially he’d be French at birth.

There is a theory that the ship that actually sunk was the Olympic, it had had issues and the theory goes that to get the insurance they swapped the ships and sunk it. I will say that there is no real evidence but some do believe it.
