Anyone here experience Sciatica, if so, and recommendations on pain relief or exercises I can do? I've been in quite a lot of discomfort for the past month or two. Been to the Docs, and just waiting for a referral to have physio/MRI scan. I might be pushing up daisy before that happens 🤣🤣 |

Sympathy OP, much sympathy.
This worked for me.
Speak to a Massage Therapist (and not the recreational type!) maybe can help. About 2 years ago I started getting spasms and trapped nerves in my lower back. Physiotherapist was stumped, I had a massage as a desperate measure almost, when I explained what I could and couldn’t do she knew exactly the problem. Monthly massage now and while it’s not completely gone the ‘attacks’ are infrequent and generally headed off before it goes fully. |

Sports therapist here 🤚...I personally wouldn't recommend any exercises or stretches at this moment in time (if pain is acute)...any positions or movements that results in flare ups are best avoided. Focus on rest...specifically in a position that calms the flare ups, and use anti inflammatory remedies (gels, ointments , medication or even ice) on the area where the pain originates (that mostly would be lower back/hip). Everytime you get the flare ups the sciatic nerve becomes inflamed and swells up a tiny bit, making it much more easily irritated, becoming like a vicious cycle ...break the cycle 🙏 and rest is the best way to do that. Once symptoms subside you can start to introduce some exercises 👍. Hope this helps 🙏 |

"Where's the pain?
Can cause pain in different areas "
Was about to ask this too.
I have neuropathy which includes sciatic pain so my answers are only based on my experience. Certain stretches help, as does high frequency electro wand (a kink experiment that came with a surprisingly wonderful side effect).
Meds wise I take a combination of pregabalin and duloxetine which keeps it mostly manageable. I have morphine for when it really flares.

Sciatica is horrible. Naproxen is one of the only things that helped me (+ Solpadeine Max for a few days when it was at its worst). I also have a shiatsu heated massager, which can give a bit of relief when I use it on my hip. Hope you feel better soon 🙏🏼 |

This would have been the absolute worst advice for me to follow when I experienced it as being up on my feet and moving was the thing that brought me the most respite |

Assuming it's caused by compression of the discs and it normally is a few exercises to open them up should help probably the best and easiest is the catand cow yoga pose it opens up the lower spine. What you do need to take into account is that it will take a few days to feel any major improvements as the sciatic nerve needs time for the swelling to go down. |

Sorry to hear this, OP. I experience this about twice a year. It comes from nowhere. I'm just coming out of a flare up that started last Tuesday after I got up from the sofa.
I found that moving around helped, not sitting around for too long, finding the best comfortable position in bed - but prolonged bed rest was counterproductive - and taking Ibuprofen. |

One of the best stretches for it,but obviously only once you have seen a Dr to make sure it is safe.
Sit on your kitchen counter, knees at the end hung over, straight back gentle leg raises and hold for a few seconds then lower back down gently. |

An adjustable back brace (from Amazon) helps mine when it flares up. Someone on the forum mentioned it on a previous sciatica thread. I mean it’s not sexy, but it helps.
Back spasms in bed are my issue 😭😭

Sure being on your feet and moving might push blood flow into the area of pain, which can reduce the sciatic sensation in the moment, but that doesn't mean it won't have a negative effect in the long run (as muscles contracting around an irritated nerve can cause more irritation)...I'm also a bit reluctant to believe there was no resting position you could adopt where the flare ups were not as bad, but I do not know your history and indeed general advice doesn't work on everyone. My advice is based on the biomechanics of sciatica (the sciatic nerve being irritated by something pinching or trapping it, and rest is necessary for the inflammation in the nerve to subside) ...and yes it is just general advice and the individual still has the obligation to get a proper assessment 👍. Every BODY is different, and treatments should be based on an individual's needs...but general advice can only be general in nature. |
