What advice would you potentially give a new gym goer?
I would tell them that you wouldnt need to jump straight into tracking every gram of protein, you dont have to optimise that yet, just get in there and get comfortable in the space, eat more protein in general, but nothing crazy, just get into the gym on consistent basis |

Agree on the protein, other than for very brief periods I’ve never tracked protein, hard training will make you crave more of it anyway so just listen to body
The most optimal routine will be less productive than a routine you enjoy
Learn perfect form early on, easier to learn it straight away than re learn it later, I’ve only ever had one injury in nearly 30 years and that was off a bench not being centred right in the smith machine not from form as I make form a priority over weight, everyone I see injured at my gym trains with utter dogshit form |

I haven’t been since before Christmas so probably shouldn’t even be commenting 😬😂 but… if you suffer from anxiety to be aware that exercise mimics anxiety symptoms (raised heart rate etc) and it’s just your body responding normally to exercise, it’s not necessarily the anxiety kicking in - you’re safe. |

Before giving any advice, I would ask what their objectives are...than I would give advice based on their desired achievements. Consistency would be the only advice that I would give on a general basis regardless of the objective... |

I used to go straight from work. Once I arrived home I didn't want to go out again...especially over the winter months. Motivation was a big issue for me. For some reason I always picked up chest infections quite easily. In recent years I've taken up walking with a couple of my friends and we've had some amazing adventures, long distance hikes in Scotland and Wales.... heading to the Alps in a couple of months. I feel fitter now than I did in my teens. |

Figure out your goals, develop a routine, have fun, be consistent.
Don't rush to increase the weight (if you're lifting weights). Develop your technique. Same for cardio if you're using the running machines.
Can you afford a personal trainer? If so, it could be beneficial for 6 months approx. So you can learn from someone. |

Just go.
Get a programme that's right for you as a beginner made for you.
It's important that you're there. It's important that you're not injured, so the focus should be on a gentle, progressive introduction that your body can welcome. |

Set a realistic goal that is achievable in the time frame that you have allowed yourself and commit to it. A similar example are the people who try to learn other languages on apps like Duolingo. They say they will commit, and then they try to race through each season poorly, repeat and recap without progression, cheat, lose consistency, try to skip to the harder sessions too soon and fail, become easily distracted, skip days, and then lose interest.
Set a goal and make a promise to yourself that you will commit to it. Get into a strict and progressive routine and remember that proper nutrition and rest are equally just as important.
If gaining muscle is your goal remember to eat with a surplus of calories e.g. oatmeal, rice, sweet potatoes are easy and affordable, and a daily sufficient amount of proteins and poly mono unsaturated fats e.g. Avocados.

Don't worry about whatever anyone thinks of you.
Have even just a couple of initial sessions with a PT, to get you started on a programme tailored to your needs and start you with good form.
Work out what your goals and objectives are - is it functional fitness, aesthetics, certain lifting goals, improve cardio, complete/compete in an event?
Those would be my starting points |

I'm a on/off gym goer, cardio is my thing but understand that I need to do more to get the results I want.
When starting from scratch I'll do a mix of cross trainer and treadmill, walking on an incline, then move onto light jogging for a 1 minute, walk for 9, gradually increasing the jogging time over the weeks.
I've just worked out my BMR and it's crap, so this week I'll be incorporating the weight machines into my workout in addition to the cardio. |

Our advise is go to the gym even if you don't feel like it, you'll feel better for it after." Hi _aomilatte, yes, you are right there, you will feel better for it too |

If you're going to lift weights worry more about whether you're doing the lift right than how much you're lifting.
And if your goal is to look 'gym fit' nutrition is just as important as exercise, you won't get there with only one. |

Decide what it is that you want to achieve and set reasonable goals. And find a way to make it enjoyable, or you won’t stick to it. Group classes work for some, or get a gym buddy who has similar goals.
Research what you need to do to achieve your goals. If it’s weight loss, you could be very surprised at what you actually should do compared with what you’ve always thought you should be doing. |

Don't get sucked In to gymfluencer culture, it can do a lot more harm than good depending on your level.
Have clear goals, I e. what you want to achieve, and just get in there. It's a gradual process regardless of your end goal.

"At times your body is going to hurt, try to push through those days by doing something.
The hardest bit is going.
Don't overload the weights early on.
Be consistent." Hi longleggedblond, yes, you are right there, try to push through those days are important too |

This could be a long term wrestling storyline for you.
Beanie Baby Joe keeps losing badly and after one humiliating defeat too many he walks away from the ring... forever?
Then, after however many months it takes for your transformation, you return twice the size, single digit body fat, veins popping as... Juiced Joe Beans. From face to heel. |

What is the fixation of going to the gym?
Surely you get more out of running in the open air than on a treadmill
Riding a bike outside
Playing a sport like tennis badminton or squash
Going swimming
You can buy all the equipment for above activities for less than the price of a year’s membership at a top gym.
And if it’s the social aspect you want, there are all sorts of clubs you can join.
Prove me wrong |

Guess it depends entirely on what your goals are. Purely cardio, sure - a run is nicer than a treadmill. But you won't get better at deadlifting while riding a bike. You don't have to like the gym, but no problem if others do. There's room for both! |

I've never great at going regularly. As I've got into better habits recently, I've been thinking about joining a gym again. Instead of joining again when I haven't got a strict routine of exercising yet, I've decided to do a weekly plan with a mix of runs and exercise videos to stick to. When that's ingrained in me, I'll consider joining a new gym again (I moved a couple of years ago). |

My advice was going to be 'don't be intimidated, gyms are generally friendly places', but a few people doing their best to prove me wrong.
But genuinely, if you want to go, go. Don't be put off. Everyone starts somewhere.
Make a plan - days you will go, and broadly what you'll do. Habits will soon form. Set realistic, achievable goals - ticking them off will keep you motivated (they do me anyway).
Ask advice - staff and (generally speaking, but see above) other gym goes will be happy to help.
To anyone starting, good luck! |

Same as what others have said - for new starters simply setting foot in the place is a big deal. Be consistent, find your way round the place, and make exercise part of your weekly routine.
And, importantly, enjoy it! |

I can go to my (not top of the range but very definitely well equipped and maintained) gym as many times a week or day as I like for less than £30 per month. I cycle or run there, but the gym gives me the strength training that cardio doesn't. And I get to catch up with people who have become friends at least four times each week.
Show me any costing that says weekly/monthly subscription for 'clubs' four times a week (assuming you can even find them locally - I can't!) would come in at less than £30 per month. |

I totally agree, it compliments other forms of exercise like cycling. Also a great place to meet other similarly minded folks. x |

Exactly, this happened to my wife before covid, thankfully the gym closed down.
It's now opening under new management, hopefully new training staff too |

I'd have to pay to go to squash/badminton/tennis and swimming each time, so why not go to a gym that includes it in the membership and also offers classes, equipment, guidance, a social aspect, help with form/techniques, a friendly spotter if you need one, sparring bags, water based classes, a sauna and a steam room plus a friendly face if you are having a shit day? 🤷🏼♀️

"I go to the gym once a week. When I said I lacked motivation, a guy on here said go look at men who can’t walk and that will motivate you. Yes, motivation is important too "
Motivation isn't enough for me, it comes down to discipline.
If I'm disciplined, then I'll go to the gym regardless of whether I feel motivated to. |
