I don't use the slow cooker often, apart from the odd batch of chilli. I do like to bake bread in it sometimes though.

"I never use mine. But never thought about cooking a joint of meat in there before. "

Gammon

Cheaper beef cuts for pot roasts

Lean Pork loin

Venison

Mutton

Broiler chicken

All come out lovely, even if they need a few minutes at start or the end in the oven to colour or crisp. Cuts with very little fat that would otherwise risk drying out, cuts of older or tougher meats - all benefit from the slow cooker treatment

I've just been inspired to get mine going. Turkey mince, a selection of wrinkly onion, tomato, peppers and mushrooms that were about to go in the bin, all the spices.

Dump cake - a favourite of my kids when they were little.

2 tin of stewed fruit (apple, cherries etc) - dump this into the slow cooker

1 packet sponge cake mix (yeah it’s called dump cake for a reason this isn’t gourmet baking) - dump this on top of the fruit

200g butter cubed and dotted all over the top

Cook on low for 4 hours

Cherry and chocolate was my kids favourite. Serve with custard.

Any sort of slow cooked/pulled meat in a deep/rich sauce comes out best, but I really enjoy birria style lamb or beef in the slow cooker. Delish.

"How do you do bread in it? Anyone?"

Baking bread in a slow cooker is a great way to make fresh loaves without heating up your whole kitchen. The process creates a moist, soft loaf with a tender crust, similar to a steamed bun.

1. Prepare the Dough: Use your favorite recipe for white, wholemeal, or even sourdough bread. Mix, knead, and let the dough rise once until doubled in size.

2. Line the Cooker: Use two sheets of parchment paper to line the bottom and sides of your slow cooker. This prevents sticking and makes it easy to lift the bread out later.

3. Shape and Insert: Form your dough into a round ball or oval that fits comfortably in your cooker. Place it in the centre on top of the parchment.

4. Manage Moisture: Place a clean tea towel or double layer of paper towels across the top of the cooker before putting the lid on. This catches condensation so it doesn't drip onto your bread and make it soggy.

5. Bake on High: Turn your slow cooker to HIGH and bake for 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The exact time depends on your specific model.

How to Tell When It’s Done

Internal Temperature: The most reliable method. Use an instant-read thermometer to check that the center has reached 190°F–210°F (88°C–99°C).

The Tap Test: Lift the loaf out and tap the bottom with your fingernails; it should sound hollow.

Surface Texture: The top should feel firm and dry, not spongy or soft.

Hahahahahaha absolutely but I promise this is the name. Google slow cooker dump cake for more variations (no I’m not screwing with your algorithms I swear it).
