I must admit I don't understand where this special relationship with the USA is all about? Especially now that we are trying to clinge on to.

the relationship with the USA goes back to world war 2 and the way that the USA provided support, troops and logistics etc to the allies against the Nazi's.

allowing the USA to fight against Japan to one side rather than on both coasts.

NATO was then begun as a result of that war. still going strong to this day
