"Damn… I reckon this summer is definitely going to be interesting, I don’t know how exactly. But…I can feel it…"
There seems to be a factions with their own agendas mobilising. I hope the government is geared up for the social issues that are fuelling these movements, long spells of hot weather only make it more likely.

I was just a kid, I was thinking more of Brixton and Handsworth in the '80s. At lease with those spells of civil unrest, there was some kind of justification for it. |

I was 4 and the only thing I remember was being at the caravan most of the time and sitting in a stream with some other kids in the shade of these massive trees.
It had been so long since I had worn a T-shirt I grew out of the ones I had and my mom had to order me all new clothes out of the catalog.
I think that was the last time I was truly happy, no responsibility, no worries and no stress |

"50 yrs on who remembers the 1976 heatwave.
We're only into day 3 of 2026s' heatwave how you coping?
I love the heat not the humidity."
When you say heatwave, don’t you mean a nice sunny weekend, lasting until Tuesday at best? |

It's forecast that an El Niño heatwave is to start this year, culminating at the start of 2027, so we could have some repeated heatwaves this summer, probably to break multiple records
I hope not! I despise the heat |

I was only 2!
I feel like Summers were generally hotter during my childhood though. I distinctly remember calling on friends and we just lolled around on their front wall as it was too bloody hot to do anything and the pavements were melting and being dramatic.

The cheeky slogan in 1976 was: "Save Water, Bath with a Friend". I was early teens so would take that slogan differently now |

This summer came a little before i did but i do remember a couple of late 80s summers that were glorious, camping holidays with my parents, i seem to remember enyas song and thought the words were "save the whales" as there were a couple of whales on the news that ended up in the river system disorientated... |

Yes! Now that was a heatwave! Not the few days we have now and they call it such!! Country gone soft!
That was weeks on end!
I used to live in a cul de sac any we had a stand pipe to get water from! There would be riots if they did this nowadays! |

I remember at our primary school we would take the classroom tables outside and we would have lessons in the sun.. sounds absolutely crazy but being kids we absolutely loved it
Schools would get charged with cruelty if they did that now..
You know what....I wouldn't swap a single thing about my childhood...loved everything about it...we were kids and we acted like kids...just having fun...
But we also had 100% respect for our elders....great days. |

Yes I remember 1976.
I was 21 and got married that year. There were swams of thousands of ladybirds all over everything that year
As usual people got on with life as normal - It's usually the newspapers that make a fuss. Loads of photos of people on the beach ( who'd have thought )
Yes tarmac softened in ONE or TWO areas on a certain day for a short time. I think it was the M1 and probably Heathrow so what did I care ? London was a lifetime away
Yes A railway line did warp somewhere but trains still ran in the main
Yes ice creams and drinks were in high demand
I do remember the resevoirs dwindling to 10% . I remember being fascinated as villages that had been submerged to make resevoirs began to reappear. I remember water being rationed. Slogans like 'bath with a friend' and being encouraged to only put a quarter of the water in the bath or wash in a bowl. Water rationing came into play and deaths increased greatly , mainly amongst old people but that happens every winter and no one bats an eyelid.
It was for about six to seven weeks and we had enormous thunderstorms near the end of August which was good because the reservoirs started to fill up.
Fields turned yellow, Farmers moaned, at 21 I wasn't particularly interested or bothered.
It was a few weeks in 1976 it was no world catastrophe.
Flash in the pan. |
