This isn't the first thread I've started on this subject, last few years it's the same.
Lack of respect for the water and lack of education in the dangers of entertaining open water.
Too many preventable death's of young people who's lives have been cut short needlessly.
So please please please everyone take care do your homework about water safety, respect the water.
And those with kids educate them on the dangers.
Maybe it's time to reintroduce public safety film's they could easily be included in social media ad's.
Take care folks have fun, safely. |

A young boy drowned at the country park near me last summer it was very sad.
It's worrying how many parents are happy to let their kids go swimming in open water because it looks "calm" while they sit no where near nattering away. |

When I was younger we used to go for walks with my grandparents down the river Tyne. My Grandma always said "calm waters run deep" |

Yep! Undercurrents are how most accidental drowning happens. |

I spent 6 years as a member of a SAR team and I've been trained in Swift water rescue but only to wading depth so despite all that experience I couldn't confidently rescue someone in a situation where I couldn't touch the bottom.
I've been in Yosemite and been shown footage by park rangers of people being taken by rivers and lakes all in the blink of an eye.
Most people aren't even aware of the dangers of cold water shock and yet locally I've seen idiots attempting to get into the sea in the middle of a storm. |

I only foind out recently, that the calm waters in between the waves on a beach, are actually the riptide.
If I was thinking about swimming in the sea, the calm water is where I would have gone into the water.
As for the tempersture of the water, it is the cold water shock that does the most damage to someone. Ok in a shallow swimming pool, lethal in the sea where there are waves crashing on you. |

Learning what cold water does even young healthy people can get into difficulty very quickly.
Not to mention the dangers of submerged unseen items like trolley, concrete and other dangerous stuff. |

It's cold water shock that does for most people.
The sad thing is, the people who are conscious of these things are the ones likely to see the messaging. The ones it needs to be aimed at are unlikely to have the kind of social media algorithms where it might show up (broad generalisation I know), it needs to be taught through schools and broader public advertising.
For anyone in Lincolnshire, a local activity centre/lake are offering open water safety training soon, following the recent loss of a teenager in a (different) lake. |

I think sometimes the kids are just out messing about with their friends as kids do at a certain age |

Unfortunately, kids don't necessarily pay attention to "education". We had both the police & fire brigade visit our school to talk to our students... but still the local lakes are overrun.

People think that the cold water will just make them shiver ....
Many are unaware that the body will stop pumping blood and heat to the arms and legs in an attempt to keep it's inner core warm ...... the loss of the use of the arms and legs is often why people drown ...... they don't just feel cold, they can no longer swim! and if the cold water shock hits them underwater the gasp for air fills their lungs with water and they drown . |

Couldn’t agree more. It could be said for when water is frozen over too. The dangers of that too |

The trouble is a lot of parents are clueless because they've never been taught water safety. I was never really told the dangers. I got washed off rocks in Cornwall trying to go from one bay to the next when I was 16. I didn't know the real dangers until that day. I don't know what the answer is tbh. Even knowing the dangers you think you won't get caught out because until you know what can happen you don't really believe it. People do stupid things. But parents, please educate your children and get them swimming lessons at least. Don't think the schools will do that for you. That isn't their responsibility. |

I would be more afraid of the floating turd coming towards you, when you are trying to catch your breath due to cold water shock. |

I holiday in Greece, and the number of tourists who ignore advice from locals is breathtaking, letting kids climb on the rocks just as the waves are getting to their highest...and I live on the coast |
