Built for a different climate
Jump to: Newest in thread
What should be done to help to transition UK buildings and life, to the newer climate that we're at (which, of course, will be struggling with the consequences of even more heat)? More extreme heatwaves are going to be part of a new normal |

It's been frightening to hear how hospitals have suffered, with equipment failures etc. Better Aircon would help these.
I'm assuming that we'll need much more use of shade, to prevent buildings getting such extreme levels of heat build up.
Paris has a cooling system sourced from river water |

"Tiled floors, smaller windows, shutters or blinds, earlier starts and finishes for work and school... "
I think some gorgeous tiles could be very cooling. And shutters would be a great staple, to keep heat out |

We have shutters which we close at night when it's very hot and when it very cold. They make a big difference. |

Midday naps should be mandatory. No one allowed outside during the most extreme heat.
Weather resistant materials used for the buildings so they remain cool inside and able to endure the heat from the outside. I think this is common in hot countries around the world.
We definitely need to improve our water systems and the quality of our water which has been in decline for decades. Encourage water capture and better practises for using water.
Weather adaptive vehicles and clothing. Install cold rooms in every building so people can chill out. |

Thinking back to when we were kids and had to predict "What will life be like in 2000? "...
Why didn't they make use of our ideas? I thought we'd travel in tubes (like those buildint society ones they popped the money things in). Imagine we can travel to work in a heatwave on a water slide 😂 |

My flat is in a building over 100 years old, so thick walls and well insulated so warm in winter cool in summer.
Modern homes here are not really designed for hot climates. So start by looking there |

I grew up in a very old home and it was noticeably cooler than modern buildings.
But, we've got the housing stock that we have and most of them are going to need substantial investment, to convert them for the current and future climate . The government will need to plan, which just that will take investments.
We'll probably get bodges |
