There is a solar eclipse today.

Are you also going to see it today? We will only be able to see a partial solar eclipse across england, an interesting fact about it is that this is the biggest coverage since the total eclipse in 1999.
The ones who can see it the most are people in the south west of england and those who can see the total eclipse are in greenland, iceland and northern spain.
The total eclipse will last about an hour and 50min and it starts about 18:20 and finishing by 20:10.
The best places to observe it again from will be cornwall and the south coast too  |

Last time in 1999 I used a bit of cardboard with a hole in it, casting a shadow on the ground. That worked ok 👍 |

Happening around sunset, so are glasses really necessary? Ibiza is getting a total eclipse just as the sunsets. I chill out there almost every summer, except this summer. Well, it will probably be cloudy anyway.  |

Yes specific glasses are really necessary. Otherwise turn your phone camera to selfie, your back to the sun and watch it that way, wat h it on telly, use a pinhole camera thing or smoky glass. Or even don't look at all but do not look directly at the sun with the naked eye |

It's essential that folks worship the sun by dancing naked (ideally a sacrificial virgin too, but I'm on Portland and I'm not aware of any) otherwise the sun god may take umbridge and stay hidden behind the moon forever  |

Yes, maybe, otherwise it is a good alternative to use a colander to see it, place a paper on the ground and hold the colander at an angle and let the sunlight shine through it too |

We got about 90-92% here in West Yorkshire and the moon passed about 7.10pm
I projected it, much to my neighbours' delight, onto a piece of A4 with my trusty old binoculars fastened to an old mic stand as we watched the moon clearly create the crescent.
Great fun for a warm Wed eve! |

It was a nightmare afternoon/evening. I got home after a horrendous drive through what seemed like rivers only for my next door neighbour to grab me to ask for help moving furniture and lifting carpets if my house hadn't flooded like theirs. Luckily for me their conservatory redirected the water flow away from my house but unfortunately into theirs. Obviously I helped because I'm a nice guy (honest) and they were really nice neighbours. |

Didn’t bother buying any eclipse glasses for this one but still had my old ‘DO NOT use after August 11th 1999’ ones so used those. Not everything they say will make you go blind makes you go blind?  |

I guess this is my third as I saw the 1999 one (no totality where I was though, but it went close), the 2015 one that never seems to get mentioned but it was a good one, and now 2026.
Still to experience a fully totality though, maybe I never will. But the high 80s/low 90% ones are still spectacular. |

Sounds fun and nerdy.
I tried a perforated sheet of A4 but sun went behind trees and spoilt the effect, wish I'd gone to tge coast or Spain now that was amazing. |
