Your favourite sci-fi movie or movies?

I was watching Alien, the 1979 movie by Ridley Scott last night. First time I have watched in years. Will watch Alien: Romulus and the TV show Earth sometime this week.
The first Alien is just an all time great. One of those movies, I could over and over and over again. Ages like fine wine.

I can only imagine what it must have been like to see the original trilogy in the cinema.
I remember seeing Episode 2 and 3 in the cinema. Just amazing really. |

It is tough for me. I like the Martian and Blade Runner but Alien for me edges it. Especially as I think it was just a masterpiece of creepiness and being absolute terror. |

Romulus and Earth are my favourites. That eyeball octopus in the sheep was a masterpiece! |

I like Alien, but preferred Aliens more.
Maybe it's because I was discovering WH40k at the time and the film had that vibe.
I also love Star Wars...big geek.
Event Horizon was pretty good.
Predator original. Though the recent Prey was also top notch.

I've never seen Romulus or Earth just yet. Going to watch Romulus tonight and then Earth over the weekend x |

I get that. I think I prefer Alien over Aliens as I feel like Alien is more spooky and creepy. But both are great.

Too much Ken In Space and Ryan Gosling being self-consciously cute and funny for my tastes, and while I was excited to see a non-humanoid alien in Rocky, once their jerryrigged universal translator kicked in it became just a.n.other buddy movie with lots of hokey dialogue and the science part of sci-fi taking yet another back seat.
My wife loved it obviously, and I still haven't persuaded her to watch Solaris (1972 Tarkovsky Russian version, not the shite Clooney remake), a film that genuinely addresses the sheer alien-ness and inscrutability of the other, and humanity's confusion when presented with it.
Also by Tarkovsky, Stalker is a mesmerising and even longer watch.
For more Hollywood style of sci-fi, I think Pandorum is a hugely underrated horror style pic, loads of tension building, shock moments and a brilliantly satisfying twist at the end.

The Star Wars films, the back to the future films, loved the tremors films as well.
I do most sci fi but struggle with fantasy fiction, if it has a dragon in it I will fall asleep pretty quickly.
Never liked Harry Potter and wouldn't give that woman a penny now.

The Blob: The 1988 remake is for me, the best version (and I usually hate remakes!) but all versions are a fun watch (and the unnaturally happy song at the end of the Steve McQueen original is blooming awesome!) 😁😁 |

Dune part 1 and 2.
And yes I'm a fan of the original 
Sunshine is great apart from when it turns into a slasher movie.
Dredd is brilliant.

All this talk of films makes me think of the absolutely unfilmable novels, like Stephen Baxter's Xeelee sequence. The one featuring aliens so vast and incomprehensible you literally couldn't fit them onto a screen. That's the genius of literature, making pictures in your mind that can't translate to a 2D representation. |

Another fan here of Moon- If only for Clint Mansells soundtrack (but the film is just excellent all round)
Glad to also see a lot of love for Forbidden Planet. As important in the history of sci-fi and visual effects as SW, but often overlooked (and a far more cerebral film IMO)
Little disappointed not to see 2001 mentioned much, a true classic in the genre and also film in general
Quatermass and the pit is a great old thriller.
The original Solaris is rather interesting, sometime a little difficult as it can be slow at times, then add in the cultural and language difference of Russia to the west, but certainly a good watch
Repo Man is somewhat strange but very engaging- as you'd expect from a collaboration between Alex Cox & Mike Nesmith
Attack the block proves the brits can still make an excellent and very different sci-fi
Loved The Abyss when it came out, although the effects did look rather dated when i saw it recently
Fahrenheit 451 is now looking oddly prophetic for how America is heading- and most excellent.
Logans Run- mainly for the utterly delicious Miss Agutter
The Fog (original) proper spooked me out as a kid
The Fly- both are equally good. Same story but very different movies. The film noir thriller of the original and the slightly over the top version with Mr Goldbloom
THX1138- Arguably a better film than Star Wars, the latter probably wouldn't have happened without it.
Open your eyes- So much better than the Hollywood remake, even with the delectable Miss Cruz in both versions
12 Monkeys- More from the odd mind of Terry Gilliam, think i prefer Fisher King though
