Currently in Greece, 2nd time this year. Managed to impress my 15 y/o by speaking Greek when out last night.

Not sure which gave me a bigger buzz, the fact the waiter understood or my son being impressed!

Anywhere I visit, I try to learn a little.

I used to live in Greece and found you didn't have to learn the language but the locals respected the basic please/thankyou and Good morning/afternoon/evening.

I think anywhere you go it's nice to learn the basics. Most places speak and understand English but appreciate the respect for their culture and language, especially as there are so many resources to learn from.

I always learn the basics before I go anywhere with a different language. I don't know if it earns respect I just think it's polite to at least be able to thank someone or say "excuse me".

It's good to learn a few phrases when going on holiday.

The locals like it when you speak a bit of their lingo and is a great conversation starter (which moves to English)
