Not unwanted internet messages but tinned meat....
Am trying to recreate a meal that my mother put on the table when times were hard. Spam fritters beans and chips etc. It wasn't all that bad really but anything tasted good when you were hungry.
Got a tin of Spam this evening in my shopping but it's nothing like I remember it to be...which in reality was pretty foul. What I bought today was ok and recently bought a tin of garlic flavoured Spam which also was edible.
So does anyone remember the Spam of old and can you still buy it? |

Cut them into thin slices about 5mm thick, then pan-fried without any oil in a non-stick frying pan, turning occasionally until crispy on both sides.
Drain and allow to cool slightly.
Make a chilli mayo dip by mixing garlicky chilli oil (including the sediments) with mayo.
Dunk crispy Spam slices into chilli mayo and eat!
One of my favourite comfort foods that I still eat from time to time.

Am aware that you're in Brighton not London but it is certainly a regular in pound shops in the " big smoke " so logic suggests it should be in similar shops within your region. |

Sounds great but this is a nostalgia thing. Need to buy the product from my childhood that really is so bad that probably the dogs of today would turn those nose up at it and look at you as if you'd tried to poison them..  |

I have heard of army chefs having to come up with many different ways to make meals out of Spam after their food deliveries had been hijacked.
In Hawaii, they have even developed Spam sushi after it was being introduced by the visiting US armed forces personnel!
If it is good enough for the armed forces, then it is good enough for me.

They have ring pulls now!
The trick to get it out of the tin is to put the unopened tin in hot water for a few minutes first to melt the fat surrounding the block of meat, and it will slide out of the tin with ease.

Personally, I would not touch them, as the partially cooked batter looks too soggy for my taste.
I prefer the thinly sliced dry fry method of cooking Spam myself.

You come up with some good practical tips. Can I bought today had the ring pull but then I'm plunging a knife into the meat to prise it out. Took two attempts and the meat looking a little worse for wear. |

I still have to use the knife to get the block out from time to time, as I am too impatient to wait 10min for the tin to warm up!
Another way to help to get the block out is to run a stainless steel pick around the block to separate it from the tin.
Then a sharp tap against the chopping board etc. to detach the base from the tin, then use the knife to ease it out.
