Hi Doc, noble gesture and thanks in advance.

Jpg images are not all opening in progs like windows photo viewer, some have the pic as a icon some don't. It's annoying we need to collect together and back up or store everything in one place or memory stick.

Ok easy fix lol,firstly you need to set your preferred image viewer/editor as the default program to open images, also in the top right hand corner of your explorer window is a little icon to change the view click that and it should change your icons to images

Hmm now that could be tricky lol as im sure you dont want them seeing all your private stuff ?? There are ways to bypass the password from the bios but its quite complicated ?? Let em see if i can put a guide together for you

Ok i think the easiest , fastest solution to this is to remove the hard drive and connect it to another PC and back up your data and pics of it firstly, that way if you get someone to repair it it will be clear of your filth lol !!

Doesn't sound like a PSU issue to me but I could be wrong.

I very much doubt it will work but have you reset your bios & CMOS battery (take it out for an hour or so)?

This may sound like sarcasm, but its not. Disconnect the mains power from the unit, wait an hour. Plug in and try to turn on again.

With the soft start PSUs, sometimes they stop responding to the 'On' signal - which a low voltage signal from the motherboard.

I have known this to resolve it.

Good advice, failing that its more likely a motherboard issue as if there is power getting through you should at the very least get a POST screen

Click Start, then Right Click 'Computer' and select 'Properties' - this will open a window and there will be a entry in there which says 'Installed Memory'

Also if you have loads of programs that run at start that will slow down your boot up and running

How to speed up start up times and general running......

Once your in windows hit the windows icon bottom left corner.

In the search box type msconfig and hit enter

This will open up a box and you will see a tab that says startup , click on this tab and it will show you all the programs that run on startup.

Most of them you can disable ( any your unsure of leave them ) But in general you can disable things like itunes, spotify etc.

This will not disable the programs just stop them from running straight from boot up, and you can then run the programs as and when you need them

Ok good thats that solved as 32 bit only recognises up to 3GB of ram

I would try my above post fiorstly and see if that speeds it up, also other posters have mentioned Ccleaner, which i would also recommend as this can give you a really good clean up and will help

Also, try defragmenting your hard drive. There is an excellent free program to do this called 'Defraggler' and its very easy to use.

I am not a natural typer so watch my keyboard.. look up and find I have to keep redoing everything... its soo irritating . They have changed HD took 5 goes to get a new motherboard that was correct. . the machine also randomly goes black..sometimes several times a minute. ( i have had to correct this block of text about 5 times ) they sent me a new machine but I have sent that back as the mouse keys were very noisy click sound.

next step is money back .. any ideas on why its doing this ?

This comes from someone who had decided his mouse had died and used the touchpad for three months before realising the optical hole underneath was stuff full of gunge.

OK. While typing, my cursor has a habit of jumping back in the text and continuing typing from there. There's probably a few examples of it on Fab.

It's more annoying than serious but if you, or anyone else, have any ideas I'd be delighted to hear them.

I use Windows Version 5.1 Service Pack 3.

Ok firstly i would update the drivers for your touchpad, you can do this through the device manager

But from the sounds of it you use an external mouse rather than the touchpad?

See, I wonder if what you're doing is brushing the touchpad with your wrist or the heel of your hand when you type which causes the cursor to jump.

Try disabling the touchpad in the Touchpad driver software if you just use an external mouse.

Ok well being well used means you need to give it a service lol !! Heres my tips....

1. Download Ccleaner, its free and run it, if it takes a ges dont worry it means you have a lot to clean !!

2. Downlaod Malware bytes or Super Anti spyware and run a full scan just to be safe

3. Defrag ! Go to all programs / accessories / system tools then defragment.

Doing these 3 steps should give you a dam good clean up and service software wise.

Finally go to the dell website and go to the support section and download the latest drivers for your touchpad etc, there should be an option for dell to auto scan for latest drivers

Ok samandjamie tho of course there is hardly anything on this now as I had a new HD fitted and a new motherboard at the end of may. trying to get the problem sported .. the curser and the blacking out.. they came 5 times over a week. .but nothing they did worked.

The back screen is very odd and seems like its going to sleep or hibernate of its own accord ?? Probably your best option is like you said get a new machine, whilst Dell are fairly good personally there are far better machines to be had for the same money ??

I use a company called Novatech and they are fantastic, take a look at their laptops as they do some awesome deals

Also does it have to be a laptop ?? As desktops are more reliable and easier to fix if they do go wrong ??

I would not recommend doing that !! If you are not getting a POST screen at all then its almost definitely the motherboard thats gone, one way to be sure is connect another PSU, dont worry about all the other bits just connect the main molex to motherboard and power on see if you get a POST screen.

If not then its definitely your motherboard

Sounds like the keyboard has come loose and is not letting you type anything , plug in a usb keyboard and try that

Nothing happens, its not picking the other keyboard up when rebooted. Think I may have to take it to a repair shop. But its full of filth

As your laptop has been dropped I would also look at re-seating your ram sticks and your hard drive. By this I simply mean remove them and plug them back in. DDR ram is very fussy and if it isn't seated can cause all manner of issues.

After that I'd run scandisk type function to check no windows files are corrupt, can't remember the windows 7 one off the top of my head I'm afraid at the moment though.

If neither of those work then I'd agree with what has been said. Get your hard drive plugged into a desktop, back up your files, wipe what you don't want anyone to see then off to the shop to get it sorted.

I agree on the HDD but it's worth a shot. I've been caught out by the ram issue before though, only since it changed to DDR stuff. Pc would start to do things then suddenly die. In this case it turns out the ram stick in slot two was dead and when it went to utilise it that was when my PC would error. DDR ram is fussy stuff! I've also experienced graphical errors before and that turned out to be the damn ram too.

Ok well DDR ram has been around since 1996 lol also even IF one stick of ram had become slightly unseated, it would beep and warn you at the POST screen.

Faulty ram would not allow you to boot to the windows log on screen and in my experience does not cause graphics errors ??

Anyway you points are valid just not in the case in question in my opinion

I thought all of that too. It was actually my first build with DDR that threw these weird errors up.

It was Corsair ram, purchased in a pair, though they came in separate packets in those days. I was trying to install the OS and it would get so far and stop so I thought HDD. Had a replacement drive sent to me and it did the same. What was weird was it worked for so long then stopped. Removed stick from slot two and off we went. Perfect install. I got a replacement stick sent to go back into slot two.

About a month later I would be using the PC and get crazy lines going across the screen, green, pink. I instantly thought g-card but then recalled the ram issue so set about running memtest on each stick individually. Sure enough the older one had errors all over it. I couldn't believe it either and to this date have never seen ram cause these type of issues, had me fooled at the time! The joys of home building and just the kinds luck I get

Had the beeping too on a friends PC. They moved house, got a call saying all the PC is doing is beeping. Quick visit, re-seated the ram job done.

One thing I'm seeing a lot of recently are laptops with shot hard drives. I think people forget that even though it's a laptop you shouldn't move it around when it is in use. With SSD drives being introduced now into laptops this situation shouldn't occur so much but anyone who does have an SSD should never defrag their drives! Something to check before advising others to defrag. I do believe that in general the option to defrag SSD's on laptops will be greyed out or simply not available, which makes sense.

It probably isn't the case but I'm wondering if your power button could be up the spout. Not sure there is an easy way to check this though

Hello Doctor....every time I go into chat on cam and put my audio (playing music from my PC) when I type a sentence I look up and its still typing across my screen even tho I finished about 10 seconds before hand

it also does the same in a full room when I have me cam on and no audio

What happens when you have no Cam as well as no audio in the chatroom. Totally disconnect your cam and is what you type still slow to appear on your screen? If it still doesn't slow stop your media player too whichever you are using. Does it still appear slowly as you type?

Sorry to jump in lol...

Have you connected your laptop back to the wireless network? underneath the router there's usually a label with your Wifi password .. There's a usually a Wifi symbol in the task bar (by the clock) if you click on that it should bring up a list of networks, choose your network and type in the password... hopefully that should be it!

I play a game on the Ipad that keeps crashing and won't load. Game support want me to send the crash logs so they can look into why it is happening.

I have synched the Ipad with our computer like they told me too so all the information they needed would be stored on the pc. But I can't find the crash logs to send them and am getting frustrated and suffering withdrawals from not playing my game for 3 days!

Try this process first

1. turn on PC/Laptop and keep pressing F8

2. This should take you to a boot mode screen

3 select boot with command prompt

4 Wait till you see a black box open ( command prompt screen )

5 in this screen type net user

6 you will then see a list of user accounts so you want to select your account, type.....

net user administrator * ( include spaces )

You will then see type a password for this user dont type anything just hit return, and again to confirm.

This should then change your password to blank so you can log on to windows and set a new password

Hope it works for you

Thanks for the reply....Its a 2gb ram (32 bit) Intel(R) core(TM) 2 CPU..what ever that means lol And it runs perfect when I have no cam on even in a full room

Ok am assuming that its a built in cam ?? Could be another case of updating the drivers for the cam ? Try that initially and let me know if that helps ??

To update the driver.....

Click windows button ( bottom left )

Type device manager into search box and then click on device manager icon

Then find your webcam from the list and right click and then click update driver

Yeah, as I thought that's in order.

We get a pop up error code which i,ve tried to look up in google but had no joy how to resolve the message says:

'An error is preventing the photo or video from being displayed' error code 0x8007000e

Wished it had been that simple, it opens some but not others, some photos are visible as an icon both in the folder and on the desktop, others not. Really need them all showing & opening to clean up comp

I also forgot to say that my PC has got very slow and the fan has been whirring badly, I often get the warning 'page unresponsive' and indeed this morning I tried to log onto fab and got that message, been on my PC for 2 hrs by then

Hiya 2 solutions firstly try rolling back to the previous driver ( done in same place as updating driver ) if thats doesn't solve it uninstall camera and install again but use a different usb port

Ok sounds like you have a dust build up on your fan turn off and give it a Hoover out, then download a program called Ccleaner and run it , you then need to update adobe flash player so go to adobe site and update

check ur RAM, possibly try a freeware RAM booster, remember ur computer might be struggling with too many programs at once

recommending stuff like glary utilities and ccleaner and slim computer/slim cleaner/slim drivers

cnet is a good source of the most downloaded programs, many are freeware

If possible it is far far safer to used compressed air in a tin to blow any dust / debris out of your computer. Using a vacuum cleaner is a bit dodgy due to the build up of static and the chance it could discharge and zap something sensitive on the motherboard etc.

How full is your hard drive out of interest? Same would go for anyone else that has a pc that is getting slow. Back in my younger days when I was more into optimising PC's rule of thumb was once a spinning hard drive gets more than 60% full it starts to lose performance. It'll still work, just wont find files as quickly. As well as using RAM your system uses something called a pagefile when running programs and carrying out tasks. It should only use this once all of your ram resources are used up but nether the less you NEED to keep some free space on your hard drive for this. The pagefile is basically space on your harddrive which is used by the computer when your ram runs out. So if your harddrive is very full you basically have no pagefile and this could cause you issues once your ram resources are totally used up. At minimum I think you need 15% harddrive space free to carry out a de-frag on a spinning disk so ensure you stick to this! personally I like to keep a substantial amount of free space but that's just me.

Side taken off, found a little brush to get in between the blades, cleared all the dust out, using hoover too.

Downloaded Ccleaner and run it, no idea what I should be doing with it to be honest but its free and it took seconds, loads of stuff some with phenomanal amount of memory.

Then went to Adobe, it came up with 'Your Google Chrome browser already includes Adobe® Flash® Player built-in. Google Chrome will automatically update when new versions of Flash Player are available.'

Youtube still not working on Chrome but works perfectly on Internet Explorer so I think Chrome is broke lol

Fan still whirring probably more than before

but I don't get the connection with cleaning the fan and running Ccleaner?

Your not alone on this as it has been happening to me, its an inherent problem with Chrome apparently, there quite a few people complaining about it and there should be a fix coming for Google soon.

In the meantime either just stay logged into FB or set it as a bookmark ( after you have logged in ) this sometimes keeps the issue at bay

If the fan is still whirring i would recommend getting a new one as sounds like its on its way out, they are really is to replace and pretty cheap from somewhere like maplins etc ?? The fan will most likely be connected to the motherboard by a small cable so just a case of disconnecting, unscrew the old fan and put new one on ( if unsure take fan with you to shop so you get right size )

Top right hand corner of Chrome are 3 black lines click on the and go to settings then extensions and disable any that may be running and then try again if still not working uninstall chrome then do any adobe updates and then re install chrome

Re the Youtube problem - have you cleared the Browsing Cache (NOT the history)?

Try this :

Top right hand comer of Chrome there is an icon that looks like three horizontal lines – click it then select “Settings” then “Show Advanced Options” (near the bottom of the screen) then “ Clear browsing data”

Select “From the beginning of time” and hit ‘Clear Browsing Data’

Note: If you have any cached passwords that automatically log you into websites, these will be cleared out as well – so make sure you know all your passwords to any sites which you would otherwise just automatically log into.

Depends on what your logging into ?? If your logging into websites or online email accounts then perhaps you have ticked a box to save your log in details ??

I have done that and do that regularly, still not worked with Youtube, might just change browser. I would use IE but it seems to have lost some of its links ie when I want to pay for something, the link to pay doesn't work

I have just done a fresh install of windows 7 which fixed some issues. However I now have I.E.10 on and a major issue. The letters get jumbled on screen when I type stuff. I look up to find the last 3 words typed now in the middle of the sentence.

the other issue remains unsolved you tube videos buffer and don't play properly. its better than before update but still does it.

please help both are frustrating

Hiya,

Can i first ask have you done the clean install with an original recovery disc or purchased copy ??

It could be that by doing the install you are missing a few up to date drivers, i would do all the necessary updates via microsoft ( there will be a lot due to clean install )

Once you have done all the updates try again and if you still have the same problem try installing Google Chrome and see if the problem occurs with that ? ( or open notepad and just try typing anything and see if the problem occurs then )

Process of eliminamtion to start with

If this is a laptop this could well be the same problem had by someone else near the start of the thread. That is you are brushing over the touchpad as you type which will move the cursor. You can de-activate the touchpad if you use a mouse.

Have you tried writing an email and found that misspelled words are highlighted in red ?? ( it even works on here )

Its because the spell checker is integrated into the browser so when you do not spell something correctly it is high lighted in red and you simply right click and correct it

Wonder if someone could help. When I go into chat and turn on my cam I can see what is on it, however the camera icon doesn't appear next to my name for other to view it.

If I allow sound the speaker icon appears but again no camera icon.

Iv logged in and out and turned off/on before anyone suggests that

when you open a new browser or click on a form etc to start writing in a box , if you haven't put your curser on the page and clicked it you start typing but when you look up there is no writing

where does all that text go ?

I have already done that, much faster than it was before and as I said, youtube still not working. Any other browser will be fine so long as its as easy to use and set up my homepage as google/chrome/IE is, hence I don't use firefox, just too fussy and complicated.

I popped into that shop in town, need the number of my motherboard so they can give me the right one but average price £15 and I didn't think that was too bad at all.

Hi,

Quick question is it the fan on your motherboard thats making the noise then ?? ( heatsink fan ) These can be model specific so make sure you do get the right one, they are straight forward to replace but make sure you sit it the right way up

As for browsers give Opera a go its pretty easy and straight forward and i will do a little more digging on the youtube issue today

Lol thats actually a really good question, in actual fact every single keystroke you make is logged whether the actual type is displayed or not, however each letter is so tiny in memory terms even war and peace would barely take up any space these days
