Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Woman's Hour is discussing the phenomena of YouTubers. A very sad comment from a young person that the YouTubers care about their followers sometimes more than their parents.

Do you follow any of these paid YouTube people? Do you have young people following people, travelling around to meet them?

Do you understand this?

What i tend to find is that young folks care a lot more about their parents than could be ever gleaned from their Facebook, twitter feed, youtube comments etc.

Especially those who's mummies and daddies have provided the car, the clothes, the foreign holidays etc.

I have a 16 yr old son who follows a few people on you tube only because what they post amuses him or is associated with one of his interests, if the kids are sensible and well grounded it's not an issue I don't think, I however do have a great relationship with my kids, some of his friends parents aren't as lucky

Bradford

Yes... Kinda.

A share of the advertising Google puts on the video goes to the content maker.

Watch this video, as always Mr Grey explains it well.

If they get lots of followers (some have several million) then they get paid, sent on PR gigs, have meet and greets for their fans and resources to make more stuff to put online.

The Media Show on R4 tomorrow afternoon will feature some of the YouTubers. I'm doing my best to try and understand what the yoof are using these days.

Well I never knew this. I thought YouTube was for watching old episodes of Mary Mungo & Midge.

People follow the people who upload their original content. They go and meet them and then follow them on Twitter too.

...and the original poster gets paid for all this?

I don't even know how Twitter works either. I really should be with the times of today.

Invariably it's totally irrelevenat to the actual vid.

Good for earlier music, 60's 70's era.

Not everyone gets paid. Some have been selected, some win competitions to become paid YouTubers and others have so many followers that they get signed up. At least that's how it was explained to me.

I've managed to grasp the Twitter. My 'followers' grows each time I publish something. I don't understand why but every once in a while I just pose a thought and they seem to like it.

My brother is a scientist and has over a million followers, it brings in enough money from adverts to enable him to continue with his self funded research

Good for him. Monetising these things seems to be the future.

Just have the words " sex" or "fart" in your title and the hits really go up.

Have "farting bunny" included in your title and you are sure of 100.000 hits very quickly

Do we test that on here before hitting YouTube?
