Sounds good as long as working mothers get it for each child , may encourage part time work |

Hmmmmm .....
it's not the children's fault. I thought we were all for getting children out of poverty? It's a problem for sure but financial sanctions are not the answer. Children are not Iran! IMO. |

So a man and a woman fall in love, get married and have 2 or 3 children, well within their financial means, then hubby dies or leaves and refuses to pay child support !. What happens then ? not every single parent is single by choice. Are her children less important that those whose parents are still together ????.....  |

we all know there are various reasons that this happens - we could discuss , debate and argue the odds

I'm a single mum now, till j3years ago I was happily married. Now I'm even happier separated, unable to work due to youngest son having additional needs. I don't get benefits so if child benefit was reduced we wouldn't cope financially |

I honestly think each home has different situations and needs and I think that they should look at those on benefits and fit their needs accordingly. For example single parents whose children are in full time education should receive help getting back into work, and proper help not just told to look for a job. Those who honestly can't work for whatever situation should have the help and support they need. We are a country united and many people do need benefits but many also abuse the system. |

I'd rather see high earners who still claim child benefit lose their money than those in genuine need. I despair at the way some people in this country think. |

I totally agree, those who earn enough to support themselves an their families should not receive benefits.
Help should be for those who need it, not those who want it. |

I remember the Scottish Parliament Elections in 2003, I starting to take an interest in politics.
I was reading the Scottish Socialist Party manifesto, out of interest. I'm in the middle, politically. I think both Capitalism and Socialism have their benefits, and too much of either is bad, so a mixture is ideal.
However, part of their manifesto was saying that they would end means testing of everything, which I feel is bad.
Not everyone should get it. A single mother who happens to be a lawyer, probably doesn't need it.

The children are our future.
In the grand scheme of things child benefit is not that expensive in my opinion. It is also not helpful to only talk about the extremes like footballers wives or the very rare families of ten!
It's one of the fairer benefits that genuinely make a difference and we can afford it. |

Welcome to last year. Earn over £50k now and for every £100 you earn over that, 1% of child benefit is claimed back in tax, so it doesn't take much to lose the benefit if you continue to claim it. |

Single Working Mother here who has certain benefits (I hate that word!)...my partner left me for another woman and started a new family with her...i work full time and im at the top of my payscale in my job if I do overtime my benefits get cut and the following year i get penalised and have to live on less but if i don't some weeks we have only the £32 child benefit to buy food for the three of us...my ex meanwhile lives in a huge house, two brand new cars (one is a BMW), and holidays at least twice a year abroad...he pays me £104 a month maintenance through the CSA. In my opinion the absent father should be contributing way more and the whole system needs a bloody shake up...i did not ask to be in this position, and i have no way of getting out of it anytime soon. Its easy to prey on us and target us...but we aren't all workshy baby machines sat at home counting our thousands! |

Think it's a bit naïve to suggest people have children because they are careless and want to make money from them.
This is going to sound a little crass but if you were cynical enough to just want babies to make money then why not choose to foster. The 'rewards' are far more than the paltry amounts you receive from the benefit system. The added bonus is that when you have earned enough you can give back the little 'money-makers'.
(Fostering is very noble and essential and I admire anyone who can offer a child a better life, just trying to illustrate a point, that the vast majority of people do not have children for the financial gains the benefit system provides). |
