I just got a puncture in the car tyre, a big chunk of steel right on the edge of the tyre, so it is scrap now, and it had a good 18 months worth of life left in it

that sucks!!

Do you have a spare though so many cars don't.

yes I did have a spare so I was ok

I think new cars not having a spare is a bad idea, the slime they give you to put in the tyre would not have worked on this puncture, that's for sure.
