Keeping a fridge / freezer in a conservatory
Jump to: Newest in thread
I keep a spare fridge freezer in a conservatory but only recently became aware that freezers do not function effectively if the outside temperature is too low . Have any members experienced problems by keeping fridge freezers in unheated rooms such as garages or conservatory's . Are there any soecidpfic models designed for use in these areas ?. Mine appears to work fine in the conservatory though I am not certain if the fridge area is as effective as it should be . |

Which even has a page on it and recommendations...if you're worried that the fridge isn't working effectively, get a fridge thermometer for a couple of pounds and check the temperature regularly-it should be 4 degrees or below |

Freezers work by heating up a liquid through the elements that are at the back of your freezer the heated fluid rises to the top of the element and the cold fluid drops to the bottom and cools down your freezer. If the heater can't warm up this fluid because it's just to cold then the freezer won't work. But I wouldn't think the temperatures in this country would go down low enough to have much effect it might just mean the heater has to work a little bit harder reducing the life of the freezer. It also works the other way round if it's to hot. Hope this helps |

my fridge/freezer is in a little outhouse area i grandly call the utility lol when the temperature drops too low the freezer stops working and the food defrosts...which is very annoying!!
i was told that putting it on a bit of carpet would help it but i think thts a bit rubbish as its to do with the way that freezers cool and the elements on the back. |

It's more to do with the modern refrigerants and there working parameters.
There are kits you can buy!, or you can put some heat in the room, but the usual culprits are the modern fridge/freezers. |

"I used to work in a place that had big walk-in freezers, and no external heating.
When it was *really* cold, we'd pop in the 'fridge for a warm!"
I used to work at a frozen turkey factory, in summer when it was really hot & humid, we used to go in the blast freezer to cool down, came out looking like Scott of the Antarctic |

That is exactly what the article in the Daily Telegraph said to day .Apparently only Beko guarantee their fridge freezers to work up to below minus 15 . |

Hello all,
there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding about how a fridge or freezer works. Do not wrap or insulate the external coils (evaporator) as the warm gas within needs to be cooled by the outside air. If you do then the device will stop working.

the fridge/freezers that cause the problem are the ones with just one freezing pump.
the fridge senses the air outside the fridge is below the fridge temp, so it thinks it's not needed and it stops, unfortunately this also stops the freezer cooling as well so the freezer warms up and spoils the food. newer ones don't have this problem |

"I've had a couple give up the ghost using them in my garage. I've now got one designed for outside use. There was hardly any difference in price. . What make are these ?"
The one I got was a Beko. Been running ok for about 4 years now. |
