Dementure and a link with over the counter drugs

How many people regularly use an anti histermine, a Night Owl insomnia type product, or something for incontenence? Should we worry about the findings of a research group linking an increased chance of dementure in a study group over the age of 65 regularly taking one of these over the counter medicines?

As someone who has regularly taken an anti histermine due to hay fever since a teen, should I worry?

Its certainly something to consider ... but Dementia and other diseases/conditions of the brain are so complex I doubt in our life time at least we will be truly able to say what causes it or increases your risk.

If you read all recent research you wouldn't ever take anything ... I try wherever possible for natural remedies but if drugs are needed as a last resort then take them.

My Father never drank, smoked, took any over the counter drugs or ate a poor diet. He was diagnosed with dementia in his late 50s. Until we start to get proper research funding into the area, similar to levels seen for cancer, we are going to see an explosion in dementia cases which is going to be like a nuclear bomb going off inside the NHS.

Saw my grandma yesterday who has it, brain is gone mostly, quite childlike and off with the fairies :/

As we live longer then the more dragging issues we face.

I think in general with drugs its best to take just abit more than minimum you need

I have a feeling I'm gunna end up with this when im older my memory is already shoot to shit and I'm only 32! Hope they get funding and can find some sort of cure but then I think that about every disease that's out there x

I would certainly throw out any aluminium pans. Research has shown aluminium leaches into the bloodstream. This is why in the USA amalgam fillings are outlawed.

I don't take any over the counter meds unless it's absolutely necessary. And even then its only painkillers. I rarely take any medication at all to be honest. But I'm 20, and have a memory like a sieve! There's so many things that can cause so many illnesses. I think the only thing to worry about is if you have a susceptibility to it already. With most serious illnesses, two people can go through exactly the same things for their entire life, and one may end up ill, and the other may not, due to an existing susceptibility. Similarly two siblings can be separated at birth and live entirely different lives. Both may already have a susceptibility to something, but it's possible that only one of them will end up ill, and one not because of environmental factors. There's no need to get worked up about it. And if you're seriously worried then speak to your doctor about what you can do to help prevent it.

Firstly correlation does not mean causation. More single men use fan but that does not mean that they caused swinging.

The study was upon over 65s who later went on to get dementia, so it potentially does not translate as relevant to younger people taking the same stuff.

I take antihistamines and will watch for further studies, including replication and meta analyses.

Another aspect of the study was that it covered a wide range of medication, not just anti-histamines.

I think the media have hyped it, boiled it down into A causes B - totally inaccurately - and the study shows nothing like the media scare in the slightest.

The OP uses talk/type software. It was easy to tell what he meant.

OP I take all of these research claims with a pinch of salt. You need to look at sample sizes, methodology, funding streams etc before making any judgement on it. Also, peer reviews help To determine legitimate conclusions.

I'm interested to know whether it's anti-histamines and drugs for sleep problems that are a potential trigger for dementia, or did the researchers also look at whether allergies and sleeping problems are the link?

I'd suspect the latter, if I was going to place any bets.
