Assuming you've already done The Wire and The Sopranos? better by miles than any of the above.

Of your list I'd go for BB. Homeland series 1 was good but rapidly nosedived after that (although Mandy Patinkin's beard alone probably makes it worth watching!)

Homeland was excellent until about 3/4 through season 1, then it just got silly! all subsequent seasons have been watched whilst in a straight jacket to avoid throwing things at the stupid woman on the telly!

Breaking Bad excellent, they had a package and stopped it correctly before the story got repetitive.

NCIS has so many episodes it's got in the lift music category of TV don't choose it but don't mind it.

Orange, not bad.. think it has done it's lifespan though.

Damn I am hard to please...

Out of your list, I would say Breaking Bad but my personal favourite TV 'boxsets' are Dexter and House, closely followed by Prison Break!

Really?!?

ok...

The Wire: on the surface it's about a police team put together to investigate a drug-dealing gang, using (among other things) a wire tap on the public payphones used by the gang. But really it's a many (many!) layered dissection of problems in society in the post-industrial era. You almost certainly don't have time to read all I could write about the themes explored.... each season looks at the same issue (not the same incident) from a different angle, and the overall effect is of a slow 'pulling back' from looking at a drug gang being investigated by the cops, to how the drugs are imported, to how local government politics and the education system perpetuate the problems, etc etc. The language takes a bit of getting used to and you need to pay attention - creator famously said he wanted people to 'lean in', and when asked 'what about the casual viewer?', replied 'fuck the casual viewer, I don't want them!'

The Sopranos is about a present-day (ish) mafia 'family' in New Jersey, and also about the actual family life of the boss man and some of his lieutenants - but the twist is that the boss is also suffering from anxiety attacks and starts meeting a therapist to discuss his problems.

Both have some truly excellent acting and writing, and over the long story arcs they explore all kinds of themes over and above the basic plotlines.

Titz Towers, North Notts

Breaking Bad - I found it overhyped and frankly some episodes were tedious.

Walking Dead - first series good, second series depressing More like the Waltons with a zombie popping up every so often.

Sons of Anarchy - I've actually got a comedy routine based around that show.

One thing I look at when looking for a new series is IMDb, I don't know if you're familiar with it but they have two separate scoring systems from fans and critics, helps to cut through the hype
