How about an avatar contest based on movie posters? Recreate a classic movie poster in your own way, photoshopping in the name of the film if you have to. I think this will let people get creative.

this was just done using eye shaddows that were bright i colour.. it spured me on to then go out an buy a shit load of face paint and ever since ive been creative with paint
