Very interesting show on Radio 4 about altruism ie people doing things in a selfless way to help others.

Made me think about what altruistic things I do.

Might sound small but I always girt and shovel most of my street.

What about you?

Nothing. I am completely selfish. Ayn Rand (any book) is my Bible.

Help my auld dear n my dear auld nana in their gardens when I can.

Also the usual stuff like holding doors open n helping folk who are obviously struggling(oaps spilling shopping out their wee dolly trollies n such like)

It's nice to be nice and it is it's own reward

There's nothing I do regularly ut when the time has come to do the right thing in life I seem to have usually made the right choices.

Once swam out off the side of a bay to rescue a dog that had fallen off a cliff into the sea

Stope two Asian men leading a pair of kids of long enough for the police to arrive (one kid was homeless and ran away before police showed up the other had been reported missing ealier that day the men claimed the children had been stealing and we're taking them home to be disaplined)

Comforted a cat while it died after being hit by a car.

My main altruistic effort though is not murdering the idiot I have to follow at work who always fucks up his work and I have to fix.

I should get a sainthood for that, he's that bad

I used to do voluntary work up until a month ago. Been doing that a couple of years.

Right now I've just taken in a couple of ill rats that someone can't look after.

I always try and help people if they need it. I think everyone should do nice things all the time. It makes you and the recipient feel good. The world would be so much nicer.

Is anything we do ever truly selfless? By doing good things we give our selves a pat on the back and it makes us feel good etc.

I spend the extra 60p on an all day bus ticket instead of a return and give it to someone at the bus stop when I get home.

If you gain any satisfaction from helping your fellow man, then there is no truly altruistic act.

Some people are so damn smug about how wonderfully altruistic they are....

I was wondering the same.

Still nice though.

Spent years involved caring for my mum who had dementia. Employing private carers..stepping in and doing the caring myself which was very hands on...in everyway..say no more. If you love and care for someone you can do so much.

I know getting pleasure from helping others makes it seem not altruistic, but the fact is looking out for others welfare is altrusim. Nobody is obligated to help someone else, yet they do.

The fact that you enjoy being selfless to benefit someone else, and enjoy that, means you're a decent person too.

If you help others and expect to be praised, given attention for doing so, or be lauded then you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

I don't know that there is such a thing as true altruism. I think if you do something selflessly for someone else, it's a kind thing to do but you get a kick out of that, it makes you feel good so is it truly altruistic?

I like doing nice things for people, it makes me feel good. I do it often in different ways.

Yeah I'm constantly feeling bad for doing stuff for people I probably shouldn't be doing.

My business suffers, but I like to help people with problems. If I can fix it for them I will, regardless of the consequences.

Well, I think we all want to play with your puppies. What is the going rate?

I need to know how altruistic I am when I turn down my fee and do it for the pleasure of giving

I could make a cheap joke here about how amazing it must be to play with your puppies...but I'll resist from doing such a thing!

"Is anything we do ever truly selfless? By doing good things we give our selves a pat on the back and it makes us feel good etc. "

And that's good. It doesn't matter if we are cheered up by doing nice things for people. What matters is that we do the nice thing.

There's a lot of doing the right thing that won't leave you feeling good.
