This morning I stubbed my big toe on my stairs.

It flipping hurt !!! Split my nail downwards

When I got home from work I took my sock off to find a red swollen big toe.

Any suggestions to ease the swelling ?

Failing that I will except cake !

cold compress, ibuprofen to reduce swelling.

Im no doctor but sounds nasty and get it checked out.

I stubbed my middle toe so hard on a wooden blanket box that I broke it...

and because of where it was there wasn't anything I could do about it so I had to take very strong painkillers and tough it out

regardless of what you perceive on here the forums are generally a nice place to hang out...

the abuse only occurs because people have misconstrued the OPs original comments (usually deliberately

Seriously warm salt water !!! Soak your foot for ages .. Last thing you need it to get an infection in it !!!! Need to stay off if and relax and hopefully it will get better fast

Keep a very close eye on it!!! A big man trod on my foot at Xmas - I thought he'd broken my toe but he'd really badly damaged my nail. It's only just growing back & my pretty toes aren't as pretty as normal

Salt water is very good too & pull the toe/skin away from the nail - will really hurt but will release any infection too.

It's likely you've broken it-but don't worry. We break toes regularly. Ladies, when you've worn heels on a night out and you can barely walk the next day? Broken toe/s.

The only problem once the initial pain eases is that you may find your toenail eventually makes a merry little trip away from your toe.

It will likely grow back, but if you've split it as you say you may have damaged the matrix, which could mean it will take a looong time to go back to normal (it may grow with split) or it may in fact never go back to normal. Sorry to bear bad newses!

Alternate hot and cold compresses, with the cold for significantly longer. Elevate it and relax very comfortably. Ibuprofen gel may ease pain at the site. Also take ibuprofen tablets - stay away from maximum dose, if using the gel too.

Triple layered chocolate cake.

I pulled my finger nail off at work last week, I genually felt sick, its still raw and so bloody sore

I split rhe nail on both my big toes last summer. I had no recollection of hurting them

They grew out fine pretty quick. Big hugs op toes and teeth are the most painful things xx
